Studio: Shout! Studios
Release Date: September 19, 2023
Rating: PG-13
 Film:  4/5

 Plot
How do you find lasting love in today’s world? For documentary maker and dating app addict Zoe (Lily James), swiping right has only delivered an endless stream of Mr. Wrongs, to her eccentric mother Cath’s (Emma Thompson) dismay. For Zoe’s childhood friend and neighbor Kaz (Shazad Latif), the answer is to follow his parents’ example and opt for an arranged (or “assisted”) marriage to a bright and beautiful bride from Pakistan. As Zoe films his hopeful journey from London to Lahore to marry a stranger, chosen by his parents, she begins to wonder if she might have something to learn from a profoundly different approach to finding love.

My Thoughts
Normally this would be a title I would probably skip, but my wife saw it in my email box and put in her request, which turned out to be a good thing. The film is a lot of fun and actually tackles a pretty serious subject—arranged marriages—and the cast is excellent. I’m a big fan of Lily James and other than Emma Thompson, the other cast members weren’t familiar to me, but were overall excellent. I really liked the way Jemima Khan tackles the subject and looks at it from multiple perspectives.

The presentation is about what you’d expect from a rom-com. The digitally shot production sports solid colors, plenty of detail, and adequate depth. The DTS-HD MA 5.1 soundtrack is mostly dialog driven, but when the locale moves to India, the soundstage really opens up and utilizes the rear speakers quite well.

 Conclusion
I’m glad my wife pushed me to review this film and I enjoyed it a lot more than I thought I would. It’s very thought-provoking and my wife and I were able to speak about the subject matter days after watching the film because neither of us could get it out of our minds. This is definitely not the norm from a romantic comedy. This one is easy to recommend.
