JVC 4100 Update

JVC 4100 Update:

I got my JVC 4100 (aka NZ9) up and running for over a month now and thought I would give a progress report.  I am not a projector expert so my comments are that as a layman not as a professional.  And the only recent projector I can compare this too is my former JVC 3000, which was rather good.

Boy, am I enjoying this projector.  The colors are much deeper, the blacks are blacker and the whites are whiter. But the big thing is that the picture is much brighter, something I was hoping for. Also, and this comes out on 4K Bu-Rays the image is very sharp. In fact, my brother and I thought that the image is sharper than kin a movie theater.  I have four inputs connected to it:

1.  Panasonic 4k Player
2.  Verizon 4k Cable
3.  Apple 4x streamer
4.  Broadcast TV Tuner.
There is  no question that he 4k Panasonic gives the best and most detailed and colorful picture. The TV Tuner, receiving broadcast TV that is considered “SDR” also gives a wonderful picture, very bright and colorful, but not as detailed. It is better than the cable picture. The cable is still very good and I am content with it, unless you compare it to something else.  Images ae the Apple vary by which streamer I use and what content, but it generally is also superior to cable.

The unit is set to automatically switch from “HDR” or “SDR” which it does well, except, occasionally, when I change channels on cable. It will randomly go from one to the other and I have to adjust it, no big deal. I am very pleased with how good a black and white mvoie looks on it!

I just installed a 3100 and love it as well. The 4100 was out of my budget and would have been overkill for my smallish screen anyway :)

Best projector I've owned including the RS4500 and the Sim Lumis Host. Black levels as calibrated by Kris Deering are outstanding. Mode 3 fade to black is excellent as well.

I agree with Craig
Best projector I’ve owned.
All of the picture quality improvements over the 4500 are subtle but collectively bring the 4100 to a new level.
Mode 3 along with 8K are icing on the cake.

Just some food for thought on B stock 4100s
AVS has a great price on them when they get them in and Kris Deering has stated that the ones he has calibrated are just as good and sometimes nicer than A stock ( remember they started out as A stock- and the problem it had was fixed).
The downside is the one year warranty which can become extended to two by using the right credit card.
I realize you are taking a risk but you only lose one year warranty at a great savings.
The best part is if you do need service the AVS sales staff will have your back.
Maybe this helps get someone closer to owning a 4100.

OK, you guys got me with all this new laser projector talk.

I'm going to be getting my B stock projector on Friday or the following Monday.

I couldn't quite swing for the 4100, but I'm sure the 3100 will still be a worthy upgrade from my previous RS-420.

This will be my third JVC projector I've gotten from AV Science, and I've been happy with each experience.  This one should be no exception.

If you are coming from the RS420 ( per your equipment list) to the 3100 you are going to love the upgrade.
I went from the RS500 to the 4500 and it was a big upgrade back 4 years ago and now I have the 4100 which is an upgrade but to a much lesser extent  ( but the sum of the minor improvements makes for a nice overall improvement).
I’m sure the 3100 is just as nice as the 4100 except for the overall light output.
It’s also nice that the B stocks come at such a good price.

I wanted to give kind of a final update to my JVC 4100, now that everyhting is up and riunning... for a while.  Twenty years ago I would have discussed all the technical results, but I am not qualified to do that anymore. So here is a update of just watching the darn thing.

It is wonderful, just wonderful. I had it configured by Gregg Loewen, who did a damn fine job.  The images from the Panasonic 4K 9000 player are amazing. I almost can’t believe they can get better.  The 4100 not only sharpness and colors better that the JVC 3000, I get and really appreciate a BRIGHTER picture.

The Apple 4K streamer also can give a stunning image.  However, and this NOT the fault of the projector, not everything on the different streaming services do give a great picture.  But I just saw Prehistoric Planet Season II and it was stunning.

I have an Over the Air TV Tuner and it surprises everyone how great a picture broadcast TV gives. And it shows here.  Verizon cable has also impressed us with much of it’s channels, but, the Over the Air channels always look better on the Over the Air Tuner than it does on cable. Verizon Cable does give us our only “quirk.” It sometimes goes off the automatic “HDR” settings when we change the channel and goes to “SDR.” A push of a button on the cable remote fixes that.
The one thing I was not able to set up with Gregg was 3D from the Panasonic player. I did take out the 3D device from the 3000 and placed it in the 4100. When we first set up the 4100, we made some changes to the settings in the Panasonic 9000. When I played a 3D disc I got a warning, on the projected screen, that I did not have the correct equipment.  I did NOT get. this on the 3000. All I had to do (and we did not know at the time) is go to the second HDMI settings in the Panasonic and take it off to automatically “Convert to 4k.” That’s it!!! Of course we change it back for other discs.

Well, we saw Doctor Strange in 3D last night and it was great. In fact, everything we see on this projector is wonderful.

I certainly agree - the RS 4100 I have throws the best picture I've ever seen. The fade to black in Mode 3 is excellent. My only sources currently are either my Reavon X100 disc player or my Zappiti NEO and NAS, where 850 +/- movies and a few shows reside. Watching " Ex Machina " on 4K with friends that haven't seen it tonight!

Really nice system! I must say though the RS4100 just screams to be used with a good size screen and it definitely looks like you have lots of wall space. I wish I had a room that size.

On a 128" diagonal scope StudioTek 130 screen, the picture is fantastic!
