JVC RS1000/NX5, Denon X3500h, and Apple TV 4K Optimal Settings?

JVC RS1000/NX5, Denon X3500h, and Apple TV 4K Optimal Settings?
« on: September 22, 2022, 11:26:42 AM »
I purchased a JVC RS1000 last year and have had a great experience with it, a Denon X3500h, and an NVIDIA Shield 2019 Android TV.  Both are connected by 18Gpbs HDMI cables.

I've had it with the sluggishness of Android TV, so I'm switching to Apple TV, but have found it to treat content quite differently.  Here's the issue I'm seeing, so I'm curious if anyone else has a similar setup and what the recommended optimal settings would be with this hardware.  Recommendations appreciated.

Issue: Periodic black screen when idle or watching content. Sometimes it’s persistent, but usually, it’s a temporary black screen like when the projector switches from SDR to HDR.

Configuration:
  • Apple TV is set to 4K SDR, frame rate & dynamic range ON, output to YCbCr, and chroma tests successfully at 4:4:4
  • Denon X3500h set to enhance 4k, no upscaling, and showing proper pass through HDMI specs
  • JVC RS1000 - configured to properly display HDR and SDR content accordingly
  • HDMI Cables - both are 18Gbps and have worked without issue with the NVIDIA Shield, but may be causing issues with the Apple TV.

I was able to view a 2 hour HDR movie with no issues last night, but I have seen the screen go temporarily black on benign things like the ATV screen saver and photos app, and when testing some HDR content in Disney+. It’s sporadic and it seems like it’s just switching one of the variables like frame rate or dynamic range or something that’s causing this randomly.

Mike from AV Science was kind enough to respond and recommended trying 4:2:2 to see if that fixes the problem, so I'll be switching to that next time I watch content for a period of time to test.  In the meantime, I gathered some quick data about what each device with each setup is reporting.  While the Android TV and Apple TVs are technically using different HDMI cables, they are identical cables.  Here's what I've noted:

Tables are rendering weird on my end, so here's a screenshot in case that renders better.
