Ekki RS1100/NP5 Review
« on: May 25, 2022, 06:52:41 PM »
People have been asking about reviews of this model. Ekki has a review of the NP5 and I know Dylan is working on one. Ekki titles the review: NP5: The best lamp based projector of all time?

From the review:
1:35: Look inside. All of the circuit boards in the projector have been updated vs. the N5, not just the connections. The electronics are completely new.

2:45: Reference grade, fully electronic, all-glass lens with all the luxuries including lens memory

3:40: Super lens quality and perfect convergence. Very sharp.

5:00: JVC quotes 1,900 lumens. Is that true? Full panel, high bright. measures 1,960 lumens peak. 1,500 lumens calibrated.

6:50: Contrast. The NZ7 was much better than the previous series, so we were curious. By full zoom, the NP5 measures 35,000:1 fully calibrated. At middle zoom, more than 40,000:1. This is doubled other high end devices with LCOS. In picture contrast is 260:1, a very solid number that is better than previous N series.

8:55: Internal reflection test. Improved vs. N5

9:10: Color space: SDR: Really nice from the factory. HDR: Very, very good DCI coverage, with wider color space & more intense color. (Does not give a measurement here.)

11:00-end: Actual Viewing. Benefits of Dynamic Tone Mapping. The HDR performance is very good. Projectors with better black performance can show finer shadow details. The dynamic range is very good. And the colors are very natural and dynamic. The best internal processing of a projector. Excellent sharpness. Looks natural, not processed.

21:30: Conclusion. Definitely thumbs up. Two thumbs up. It’s not just an N5 redone. It’s a real update. HDM1 2.1, HDR10+, New Hardware. Better contrast. It’s not a direct successor to the N5, it’s an upgrade. In principle a new model. Based on picture quality, it’s the best in its price range. No laser, but provides definitely much which offsets. If you’re looking for picture quality, it’s the absolute top. If you need a laser, it does not have that. Very hard to find right now.

Very interesting.

So in the approximately $5-7k range... JVC NP5 vs Epson LS12000 vs Sony XW5000 vs closeout on JVC NX7. Some pretty interesting competition there.

Yes. All of them are good choices. Narrow your wants or needs down between those offerings to decide. If price is the critical decision, then Epson. If HDR handling is the critical decision, then either NP5 or NX7. If laser and contrast are important, then Sony. All of these are darn good projectors.
