My ThoughtsThe trailers for this looked like it would be something my wife and I would enjoy so we went into it with decent expectations. Unfortunately, neither of us connected with it at all. In fact, about 30 minutes in I looked over and saw my wife had nodded off to sleep—never a good sign. Of course, I woke her up and asked her what she thought of the movie thus far and she responded, “Not much.” In that we agree on. I found the first act rather flat and uninspiring and while the title character is a word smith, I felt like some of the banter was forced as if I was watching a mashup of
8 Mile and
Hamilton. Furthermore, I didn’t find Dinklage’s musical chops up for the role (although I would mostly say he spoke his lyrics, rather than sung them). The highlight of the show for me was Haley Bennett’s portrayal of Roxanne, but she didn’t have the ability to carry the film.
As dull as I found the screenplay, I was extremely impressed with the video quality and the reference DTS-HD MA 7.1 soundtrack. Imaging is certainly the highlight. In the first act, Cyrano yells out from the back of a theater during a live performance and it sounds like he’s talking from a hidden balcony in the back left corner of the room. This is one of many instances that highlight the creative sound design. While I didn’t find the music in the production all that memorable, it does come across well in the track and showcases crisp dynamics.

Conclusion Maybe we weren’t in the proper mood when we sat down to watch this given the mostly stellar reviews over at RT, but we found it to be a bit flat and uninteresting. Thankfully, the presentation is top-notch and for this reason I may try and get through it a second time at some point in the future. If you’re a fan of musicals then you’ll probably want to check this out.
