Red Notice is a movie made for the theatres but Covid circumstances had its premiere on Netflix.
Red Notice is a comedy, action-adventure whodunit and where is it movie. It stars Dwayne Johnson, Ryan Reynolds and Gal Godot. Working very separately and then working the together the three are trying to steal three valuable idols called the Eggs of Cleopatra. The international police, Interpol, are after them and they get put on the to of their most wanted list, which is labelled, “Red Notice.”
I give this movie a “sit-throughable” rating. It is not very good, and it is not designed to be taken seriously. You do want to see how it turns out and see if there are many more surprises.
The movie just didn’t grab me, mostly because the characters involved had no real chemistry between them and it was necessary for this movie. Johnson puts in his in usual likable persona, but I have seen that before. Reynolds who has shown great range comes off shallow here. Godot was terrific as Wonder Woman, but I have yet to see another outstanding performance.
The plot reverses itself several times, so I did not look for it to follow a logical order. That is, we see scenes that are later re-shown with new elements in them. And, this always gets to me. The characters are in a dozen fights and falls and no one is the slightest bit injured. (I just saw the Godfather and Michael, being punched in the face, has the bruise for months!)
Even humming the Indiana Jones theme, the movie tries to invoke older, similar movies, such as Raiders and Jewel on the Nile. It ends by not ending, but by setting up a sequel.
Nicely photographed and it looked and sound well for steaming.
