Looper (4K UHD Blu-ray) review

Looper (4K UHD Blu-ray) review
« on: February 13, 2022, 07:34:45 PM »

Studio: Sony
Release Date: February 15, 2022
Rating: R
Film: 4/5

Plot
In the futuristic action thriller Looper, time travel will be invented – but it will be illegal and only available on the black market. When the mob wants to get rid of someone, they will send their target 30 years into the past where a “looper” – a hired gun, like Joe (Joseph Gordon-Levitt) – is waiting to mop up. Joe is getting rich and life is good…until the day the mob decides to “close the loop,” sending back Joe’s future self (Bruce Willis) for assassination. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, and also starring Emily Blunt, Paul Dano, and Jeff Daniels.

My Thoughts
It’s hard to believe 10 years have already passed since this film was released in theaters and gave Rian Johnson A-list status as a director, which eventually landed him a coveted director’s role for Star Wars – The Last Jedi. Thankfully Looper is a much better film than the piece of crap Star Wars movie—seriously, that film ruined the franchise for me.

Regardless, this is a well thought out film with Johnson both wrote and directed. It has a great cast, an intriguing story, and a non-Hollywood ending, which makes it that much more special. My only real gripes are the violence and drugs, but they are both integral parts of the story and aren’t used as window dressing. This was my third viewing of the film and I’d forgotten how engaging it was.

The A/V quality is a mixed bag. The HDR grading is mediocre and while there’s a slight uptick in detail, I wouldn’t say it’s that much different than the Blu-ray. The Dolby Atmos track is the star of the show, especially if you like LFE (I LOVE IT). Crank up the volume and enjoy!

Video 8/10

Audio 10/10 (Dolby Atmos)

Special Features:

·        Feature Commentary
·        Looper: The Future From the Beginning
·        22 Deleted Scenes with Commentary
·        Scoring Looper
·        The Science of Time Travel Featurette
·        Looper Animated Trailer

Conclusion
Johnson’s Star Wars debacle may have more to do with Kathleen Kennedy that him, but his name is attached to the project. Thankfully, his other projects are more to my liking such as this and Knives Out. He is still supposed to revisit Star Wars with a trilogy of his own and I hope he hits a home run. Regardless, Looper is one of the better time travel films you’ll see and the premise holds strong with multiple viewings.

I wonder how the HDR on this compares to the UK import version?
