Water ballast and pump. Also a Swell wake shaper. My boat has front and rear ballast system and works well for wakeboarding, but not enough for surfing. I also need to buy surf boards for me and one for the wife. Too much weight difference between us to use the same board. The Ski Nautique in the background is my old boat. Sold it shortly after buying my new boat, red Mastercraft in foreground.

The Ski Nautique in the above picture is actually 37 years old. I owned that Nautique for 29 years. Anybody that saw it was shocked that the boat was that old, because it looked decades newer. Always kept it on a lift during the season and I wiped it down after every use. Before we had kids, wife and I went skiing/wakeboarding nearly every day, after work during the boating season. One summer we went 54 days in a row. Even went in the rain, as long as no thunder or lightning.

I kept my boat for 29 years and sold it for $4,000 less than I paid for it. Probably could have sold it for closer to what I paid for it, but I did not want to spend a bunch of time selling it, so priced it to sell quickly. Sold it in a day and a half. I also did my own maintenance. My boat cost me very little to operate. A boat can be a money pit if you do not take care of it and have expensive repairs, done by a shop.

One reason I like a direct drive boat, not a lot to go wrong with it and not too difficult to work on. Has a shaft that passes through the hull and a rudder for steering. As long as you pay attention and do not run over a log or run it aground, then it lasts a long long time.

Marine fishing boats used in saltwater are another matter. You have salt water attacking anything it touches. My father had a 3200 open Tiara. He did most of his own maintenance and his boat sat on a rack in a boat condo. A great big forklift would place it in the water whenever they wanted to take it out. After use, everything was flushed and washed down with fresh water. Then placed back on the rack. That was the best way to minimize the damage from saltwater and it still cost a fair amount to upkeep. A fresh water boat only has a fraction of the maintenance of a saltwater boat.
