Studio:
Paramount
Release Date:
July 6, 2021
Rating:
R
Film:
2.5/5
Plot
Eight years after the first 48 hours of mayhem, Reggie (Murphy) is about to be released from the pen. But, after the bus transporting him flips over (17 times), Inspector Jack Cates (Nolte) enlists the ex-con for another seemingly impossible two-day task to nail an elusive drug lord with a price on Reggie’s head.
My Thoughts
At some point you just knew that a sequel would come given the success of the first film. Unfortunately, it was too little, too late since eight years had had gone by. First and foremost, the plot has more holes than Swiss cheese and while the chemistry between the two stars is as strong as ever, even that couldn’t save the film. I’ve read that nearly 50 minutes was removed from the original cut of the film and I’m not so sure that was a bad thing overall given the weak script, but it did make the film feel choppy.
I can’t complain about the overall presentation and Paramount has done a good job with this new 4K scan. Like the first film, the print is very clean and detailed and gives the film a modern look. The audio track is serviceable, and gunshots ring true.
Video 4.5/5
Audio 4/5 (Dolby TrueHD 5.1)
Special Features:
Filmmaker Focus with Director Walter Hill
Theatrical Trailer
Digital Copy
Conclusion
One would have to sum up this film as sub-par and audiences agreed at the time. While the film did turn a profit for the studio, it wasn’t much of one. I’m surprised Paramount chose this film as #20 in their Paramount Presents line, but I guess it’s good for fans of the franchise to have it along with the original on Blu-ray.
