The Ten Commandments (UHD Blu-ray) review

I have seen this movie so many times having gone to Catholic schools growing up. The teachers would throw this on (or Jesus Christ Superstar) when they were too lazy to teach. So I have no real desire to see it again but having heard so much about the visuals I may have to cave.

With this thread popping up again a year later, I wondered if it was being reissued.

You won’t believe the comic book connection between Superman and the Ten Commandments.  But this is true!!!

The New York City Dept of Education asked me to teach the history of comics to 5th and 6th graders. And this part got a lot of attention and visitors into the classroom.

On video I showed a part of the beginning of the first Superman serial, from 1948, where his parents launch him to Earth.  You hear their dialogue and when he lands on Earth, you hear the Kents deciding to adopt him. The even comment on the nice blanket he was sent in.

I then show Moses being sent down the stream in the Ten Commandments, a movie made then years later.  When his is rescued by the Queen, she even comments on the nice blanket he is sent in. There is enough similarities in the scenes to believe that the filmmakers saw the Superman serial!!!

What a great story Barry. How did the kids like the class?
< This was a great experiance for me. I have been in education forever and, in my youth, teachers and parents haed comics. Now they see them as a way to et children to love reading.

I taught 5th and 6th graders who were totally interested in the subject and aske great questions. None of the “who is stronger Superman or the Hulk?” stuff.  I introduced them to Windsor McKay who drew one of the first and gratest comic strips (“Little Nemo in Sumberland”) and was also one of the inventors of animation!! (Gertie the Dinosaur.)

So I also taught them about the beginning of animation. My friends thought that they would not like silent black and white cartoons, but they loved them. I also showed them “Flowers and Tree” the first color cartoon by Disney.

They asked great questions.  “Before white out what did cartoonists use when they made a mistake?” and How many frames per second were the silent cartoons made, 16 or 24?

As a former teacher, one reason I loved it is that there was no testing, no grading.  Just kids wanting to learn.

After reading David’s review we got and viewed the Ten Commandments and it was an incredible 4K presentation.  There was no CGI then so scenes with a lot of people needed a lot of people.

I was particularly taken with the scene, towards the end, of thousands of people, at the last minute, fleeing a tyrant who had no concern for them. The packed only what they could carry, leaving their homes where they lived all their lives. Many had to carry their children, their children often taking their pets and holding onto their dolls, leaving everything behind.  They walk off not knowing if and when they will eat again and will they will settle. How sad it must be to leave your homeland, knowing you may never return.

We then turned on the evening news and saw in the Ukraine thousands of people, at the last minute, fleeing a tyrant who had no concern for them.

One scene made us sad, the other made us want to cry.
