Blade (UHD Blu-ray) review

Blade (UHD Blu-ray) review
« on: December 02, 2020, 09:53:15 PM »

Studio: Warner Brothers
 Release Date: December 1, 2020
Rating:  R
Film:  3.5/5

 Plot
Wesley Snipes stars as Marvel’s iconic half-vampire, half-human vampire hunter, Blade. With all the strengths of a vampire, and none of their weaknesses, the Day Walker uses his incredible gifts to hunt his enemies in his search for the one that killed his mother and turned him into the monster he is. Blade’s fight leads him to Deacon Frost (Stephen Dorff), a rising force in the vampire world, set on raising a vampire God bent on destroying mankind

 My Thoughts
It’s been over 20 years since I’d watched this film and while I remembered the overall story arc, I couldn’t recall specific details of the tale. This made watching it almost like watching it for the first time. One thing I can say is I didn’t recall how much gore is in it, and there’s a lot. Like my good friend Ralph Potts told me, “It’s a vampire action flick—man, you’re a lightweight!” Maybe he’s right but I’m really not complaining (my wife was), but it was one aspect of the story that I’d forgotten.

One thing I did like about the story is there some heft to it, but I can’t say I loved Snipe’s performance. He’s a little “too” cool and distant, but that doesn’t really take much away from the overall film. It’s a fun way to spend a couple of hours on mindless entertainment and the A/V quality is quite good, especially the Atmos track.

 Video 8.5/10

 Audio 9/10 (Dolby Atmos)

 Special Features:

  • Commentary with Wesley Snipes, Stephen Dorff, David S. Goyer, Theo Van De Sande, Kirk M. Petruccelli & Peter Frankfurt
  • Isolated score with commentary by composer Mark Isham
  • 4K UHD + Blu-ray + Digital Copy

 Conclusion
It’s nice to see some additional catalog titles being released in 4K outside of past blockbusters. Maybe that’s one thing to be thankful for from the Pandemic—I’m not sure that would have been the case with a full slate of theatrical releases. If you’re a fan of the film you’ll be pleased with the A/V quality on the disc and may be worth a double-dip if you want the best experience possible. Recommended.

Greetings,

Nice review Dave! There's nothing wrong with being a "lightweight" in this regard. ;)

I received my copy from Warner only yesterday so, I haven't finished it yet.

I've never seen this movie, and I'm on the fence about changing that.
