Plot : the arrival of Commodore Perry in his black ships, with guns, alarms the Japanese. Afraid that they have become weak after years of peace, and afraid of the power of the Americans, one clan leader decides to whip his samurai into shape by organizing a 38 mile cross country marathon ( apparently still run today ). Unfortunately a ninja spy for the Shogun mis-interprets this as a prelude to revolt, with tragic consequence’s.
My Thoughts – I loved this. Great story, outstanding cinematography, and an amazing soundtrack that utilizes the surround channel quite extensively at times.
Video - 4 / 5 This is a great looking Blu – ray transfer. Very detailed at times, and nicely done.
Audio – 4.5 / 5 – the DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 track sounded outstanding. Ambient forest sounds used the surround channels frequently, and the soundtrack by Philip Glass is wonderful. Great soundtrack.
Conclusion : if you are a fun of Asian martial arts / films and historical dramas, I think you might like this as much as I did.
