One or two sets of Atmos ceiling speakers?
« on: September 02, 2020, 02:24:39 PM »
Atmos Speaker Placement: 2 or 4 speakers

These are rather old pictures but the room layout is the same, in a room that is 14 by 20. The screen is 110 inches.

My chairs are as far back as they can go.  Right behind them is the rear speaker. To their immediate left and right are the surrounds.

Possibility One: Two sets of Atmos Ceiling Speakers. (four speakers in total). One pair in front of the front speakers.  The second pair a bit in front of the rear chairs and a bit more forward than the surround speakers.

Possibility Two: One set of Ceiling Atmos Speakers: The pair in front of the rear chairs and pointed at the chairs where we would be sitting.

Any comments on which would be best?

Your surrounds are pretty close to the rear wall which definitely doesn't seem ideal to get 4 overhead speakers in. See Dolby's recommended positioning:

https://www.dolby.com/about/support/guide/speaker-setup-guides/7.1.4-overhead-speaker-setup-guide/

Ideally you'd like speakers at about 15 degree intervals from the MLP, but doesn't have to be exact. The Dolby diagram shows less spacing between the rear heights and surrounds than I've seen in the past, though, so maybe it can still work for your space.

Mike or Craig may have some better thoughts there.

What projector ? Sorry - forgot you have an RS3000. Why are you sitting 14' ( 168" ) from a 96" wide screen ? You should move closer - more like 10' from the screen, and further away from those rear surrounds. Move the side surrounds even with those seats, and put 4 ceiling speakers in. That's my 2 cents right there. Better speaker separation.

You are currently about 1.75 screen widths from your screen. I'm currently 1.1 screen widths from my 16:9 screen, and it's not too close for a 4K projector.

I dug my heels in for 3 1/2 years when it came to Dolby Atmos. Why ? Because I knew moving speakers to where they needed to go for Atmos - and you better move the seating to your ideal 4K location too before installing Atmos ceiling speakers or moving side surrounds - would involve a drywall saw and drywall patch / paint. Took 3 days to move 4 surround speakers and install 2 more ceiling speakers, but now the surround sound is outstanding.  Sometimes you just need to bite the bullet and do it.
