4K discs compared to 1080P BR
« on: January 17, 2017, 02:59:23 PM »
I have been doing some research and have seen where some 4K discs are either no better or marginally better than the 1080P BR version. I would like to see what everyone elses experience has shown.

I just ordered Enders Game (4K) after hearing that as good as the 1080P BR is...the 4K is the next level since it's Master recording is over 5k rez. What I read is that the BR was mastered off of a 2k version, but the film was actually filmed at 5k?

What has your experience shown is a 4K movie that is worth getting over the BR version?

Yes. When I am looking to buy a new 4K version I am trying to only replace the BRs that will have a nice improvement in the 4K version. When i watched Enders Game again the other night on BR...it was the first time I had watched it on our LR setup with the 4K Samsung display, and I was absolutely shocked as to how good the picture looked. I then came across Enders Game for $17.99 in 4K, and decided to check up on it...that is when I found that the 4K version gets the picture even better than my BR version did. I will be receiving it Wednesday so I can verify that the picture is better. I will try to A/B the 1080P ripped version vs my 4K version on the 4K Samsung. I am hoping the reveiwer was correct and it will look even better. I also watched Warcraft last night on BR, and was shocked as to how that looked, which made me wonder about the 4K version for that movie too.

The intent of the thread was to have people list the movies they have replaced with 4K, and tell whether they thought it was an improvement or not vs the BR.

In general, I agree, but there are several 4K versions that I will get "because I want them" -- for whatever reason.

An example that I've mentioned previously is Independence Day.  Many reasons to just ignore the obvious "unreality", and relax for a fun Saturday matinee.  I've watched it at least once a year on the 4th of July since it was released.  (That makes is an ideal reference for me.)  Now I add ID Resurgence which I think has also been unjustly panned.

But Independence Day is an excellent example of how the 4K is much improved.  Deeper, broader color and greater detail than the BR.  And my tv is not capable of full HDR/WCG (though it does handle BT.2020).

I compare specific scenes/frames.  Pause on a given scene, examine the color/content, switch discs, and do the same.  Two examples in ID:  just before the father/son chess game, the NYC skyline across the rive is shown.  Large differences in the colors in the river.  (You can get a reference by pausing just as the jogger enters the scene in the lower left.)  Another is the scene where Lucas roars up in his truck and thrusts out his ruined crops.  The color and texture in the double handful of wilted veggies is much better in the UHD.  And then you can go on and check most any point during the stunning alien attack scenes.  Notice how the BR of the explosions is dominated by white while the UHD minimizes the white.  The pole dancing has some additional detail, but I didn't notice that.   :-X

I have other BR favorites (Last of the Mohicans) that I will probably get on UHD if the are released (in that instance, a three-peat).  But I'm tending to minimize my analysis until I can get a new tv.

I'll replace all my favorite movies on 4K if it provides a better / cleaner picture, and better audio. Better source material makes a bigger difference than a better projector in most cases.

That's what I am looking for...4K movies that are worth replacing your BR with. Today i will check out the 4K of Enders Game to see if it is better than the BR.

I plan on doing a comprehensive comparison test, but now I'm going to wait until I get the RS4500.
