Plot
Writer/Director Ron Shelton (Bull Durham, White Men Can't Jump) continues his winning streak of remarkable sports romances with this mid-90s fable of Roy MacAvoy (Kevin Costner), the greatest golf pro to never hit the big time. Zen master of the swing and the putt, Roy is content with his lot in life as a golf instructor at a driving range in the tiny West Texas town of Salome when Dr. Molly Griswold (Rene Russo) signs up for lessons and turns his life upside down. The quixotic Roy decides the only way to prove his worthiness to Molly - and steal her from her PGA star fiancé David Simms (Don Johnson) - is to win the US Open. Good thing he has best friend and brilliant caddie Romeo Posar (Cheech Marin) along to play Sancho Panza.
 
My Thoughts
Costner was arguably one of the biggest stars of the 1990s and he reunited with Shelton for this fun romantic comedy from the mid-1990s. The story isn’t revolutionary with its love triangle between Costner, Johnson, and Russo and the pacing is a bit “Costner-esque” at 135 minutes, which could have been improved with some selective editing to get the runtime under two hours. Overall though, it works due to the cast, which is excellent.


The video quality is surprisingly good on this title thanks to a recent rescan updating the previous iterations used on the DVD copies. Detail is very good, the film grain remains intact, and the golf courses lush and inviting. The audio track is typical for the genre with everything front and center but when the crow erupts at the U.S. Open, the surround speakers provide the right ambiance.

Conclusion

If you’re a fan of the stars or the genre, this one is worth picking up. I enjoyed the trip down memory lane and hadn’t watched the entire movie in decades other than a scene or two when I came across it on cable TV. Recommended for fans.
