Plot
When two U.S. marshals (Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo) investigate a mysterious disappearance of an inmate from a hospital for the criminally insane, the pair uncover an intricate web of deception where nothing may be as it seems. As the mystery unravels, Teddy (DiCaprio) uncovers some shocking truths about the island that will change his life forever.

My Thoughts
This was one of the best films from 2010 and as usual, DiCaprio delivers a fabulous performance. He always seems to perform his best with Oscar-winning director Martin Scoresese is behind the camera. Fortunately, DiCaprio eventually won an Oscar, but he’s been screwed out of one more times than well, Scoresese!

As a film, this is one that begs to be watched multiple times in order to catch all of the clues that are hidden within the gem of a screenplay. It all comes together in the end with an “ah-ha” moment. Furthermore, the ending will have you contemplating what it actually means (I have my own theory). The film is virtually perfect except for some gore, which I’m never a fan of.

The HDR upgrade over the already stellar-looking Blu-ray is minimal, yet noticeable. Flashes of lighting will burn your eyes and some of the darker scenes have a bit more depth and detail. The audio track is a port over from the Blu-ray and is quite good, although the score is a bit too loud on occasion and somewhat overpowering compared to the rest of the track.

Conclusion
Other than the occasional gory scene, this is a film that will keep you interested from start to finish. The intricate story begs for repeat viewings and the fabulous video encode will make the subsequent viewings that much more enjoyable. The steelbook packaging looks nice although I am disappointed that there wasn’t a digital copy included. This is the type of film I’d love to view on a long plane trip. Regardless, if you’re a fan and are looking for a 4K upgrade, it’s worth the double-dip.
