Receiver Pass Through of Dolby Vision
« on: December 21, 2016, 11:31:38 PM »
I've punched in on the other forum relating to this, but has anyone heard or learned about any AVR being able to pass through Dolby Vision?  For the most part there is little software (for me none yet) to even try this, but I would think that DV would by "tunnel" thru the AVR.

I've run into some negatives on this.  I've search some and I have a query into Yamaha, but am hoping to expand the context.

Not sure why I would worry about this since there isn't any Dolby Vision content. If and when there is, you'll need all new projectors - what's a new receiver on top of that ?

Yes, it's really only relevant for the future, I know.  But just as I was interested (for one reason) in the OPPO 203 because it was DV future oriented, and I'm keeping DV in mind as a UHD TV option, I would hope that the new AVR would continue to be relevant.

But there is an excellent response on the OPPO 203 thread in the other forum to the effect that only Dolby knows and they're not talking and no one else (by license agreement) can talk either.  So we all will have to wait to see what, if anything, comes down the line.

It seems pretty clear that jumping on the Dolby Vision bandwagon isn't really an option despite capable TVs and OPPO planning.

Perhaps the only way to test at this time is to have a Dolby Vision TV,  an HDMI 2.0a AVR, and a Chromecast Ultra routed through the AVR.   Good luck.

Since I only watch 4K on projectors, Dolby Vision isn't even on my radar, since it's not available in any home theater projector that I know of. It may wind up being " late to the 4k party ".

Most likely every 2017 AVR/AVP will either have Dolby Vision on board or will receive it via a future firmware update..  Denon and Marantz will be releasing a Dolby Vision firmware update for their 2016 models later this fall while the 2017 models will have it on board (although HLG will come as a future firmware update).  Onkyo has also indicated releasing a firmware update for its 2016 models.  Yamaha will release the DV update for the 2016 and 2017 models later this fall as well.

Most likely every 2017 AVR/AVP will be Dolby Vision capable.  Denon and Marantz will be releasing a Dolby Vision firmware update for their 2016 and 2017 models in late 2017/early 2018.  Onkyo has also indicated releasing a firmware update for its 2016 models.  Yamaha has not responded regarding updating their 2016 models.

Right.  I made another request today.  Don't really expect a response.

If they can do a firmware upgrade for the 2017s at all levels, I'm sure they could provide it for certainly the top end 2016 models.

On interesting point is that I got a firmware update for my A820 early last year.  I don't remember what it covered, but I was surprised that I got one.  I still have strong hopes that only a year later we won't be left out.

Most likely it was to resolve the inability to logon to the Pandora servers which in Denon and Marantz's case impacted all networking models going back to 2010.

Well, many thanks to Craig Mecak in that other forum!

https://ce-pro.eu/2017/04/yamahas-2016-av-receivers-now-support-dolby-vision-hlg-tidal-deezer/

"Those considering swapping out Yamaha’s 2016 AV receivers with newer, shinier models, needn’t bother. That’s because Yamaha has officially confirmed that last year’s line-up will be receiving some of this year’s must-have features – including support for Dolby Vision, Hybrid-Log Gamma, Tidal and Deezer."

I'm very pleased that Yamaha has properly decided to provide all four of these upgrades via firmware for the higher end 2016 models.  Tidal and Deezer and important both for the additional streaming audio options and their high resolution audio support.  (Which reportedly Spotify will add within the next few months -- if not, I will be changing my account.)

The Dolby Vision update was recently released to all 2016 Denon models, with the 2016 Marantz models likely to follow shortly.  The 2016 and 2017 Yamaha models still await the update.

At least there is progress somewhere with these passthru updates.  While there is sill only limited software, the numbers are growing!

D+M has pushed the DV + HLG upgrade for the 2015 Denon and Marantz flagship models (ie. X7200WA and AV8802A) back to the spring of 2018 and the remaining 2015 models to the summer of 2018.

Still no word on when the Yamaha 2016 and 2017 models will get the update.

That's not a good omen.  Should be sooner not later.  Issues in the DV camp??

You have a DV capable 4K TV and DV source material ? I don't myself.
