Dunkirk 4k UHD
« on: December 20, 2017, 08:43:58 AM »
Sound - 7.5/10
Picture - 10/10
movie - 10/10

27.5 out of 30

Awesome war movie...no fluff backstory, very little dialogue....tension up the wazoo

Sound was LOUD (but its a Nolan flick what did you expect) dialogue was tough to hear at times (another Nolan staple) and the bass while deep was obviously clipped at points.  NOT an atmos track but upmixes VERY nicely

The 4k Picture was crisp and VERY detailed....  And not a very colorful film but that's inherent of the time period

Big thumbs up for me on this one!

Mine arrived yesterday.  Probably will get to it on Friday night.  Haven't be this excited for a bluray in awhile!

Thanks for the review!   :D  I wanted to "like" your review but, the "Like" button in missing for some reason and a page refresh doesn't bring it back. :)

I really enjoyed this movie - can wait to watch it again. A couple of notes - I didn't have any problem understanding dialog. I ran my audio at -8.5 from reference. Plenty of bass during explosions ( 11.2 system with twin SVS PC12+ cylinder subs ). This movie looked outstanding on a 122" diagonal 16:9 screen from 10' - seemed to be much more IMAX footage than scope aspect footage.

The picture on my RS4500 is super clean and realistic looking on screen. Screen shots hardly do it justice. I found myself leaning this way and that following the dog fights, which I thought were amazing.

I just picked this up, but haven't watched it yet.

I have a 160" 2.35:1 screen, and am trying to decide how to watch this.  Given that it is apparently 75% or so 16:9, that would suggest I'd be better off masking the sides of my screen, and watching it 16:9.  Obviously, that will give me letter-boxing for the non-Imax content, which is quite frustrating.

Or would I be better off just zooming the whole thing to 2.20:1, and masking the top/bottom using the RS400's Masking function?  Or would that be giving up too much content?

I did a quick experiment while my 2.35:1 screen was down, and in my opinion it cut way too much off. I'm not convinced this one is framed to crop to 2.35:1, like Interstellar seems to be.

Thanks for the reply and suggestion, Craig.  I kind of figured that would be the case.  I'll just zoom for 16:9, mask the sides, and sit back to enjoy what I hear to be an excellent movie!

It's extremely interesting the way the film is shot from a " you are there " point of view of 3 different people. People in my theater certainly gripped their wine glasses for the entire movie. It's different, and in this case, different is good.

i watched with it cropped and masked in 2.0.  i didnt notice any info important missing...rememeber the filmaker is required to make sure its framed properly for non imax screens.

maybe the next view will be the other way...

I think the aerial scenes lose too much being cropped. But, my 16:9 screen is 60" tall, which looks pretty good from around 10'  !!
