A Question .......   Has ANYONE had an issue with the Manual Iris "Sticking" "Not Responding" in relation to the on screen numerical setting?

I was setting up some different profiles for 2:40 and 16:9 viewing. I had the iris set on a -13 value for 16:9. I changed to my 2:40 profile which uses the Iris at -7.
Something didnt look right so i checked with my light meter and sure enough i was way down on brightness. I moved the Iris control all the way to 0 and the reading didnt change!! I then moved the control back to -15 then all the way back to 0 ...Bingo!
Brightness then jumped way up.....moved the control back to my -7 and the light output was correct.

This has happened a few times now, the iris seems to "stick" " not respond until i move the setting from -15 to 0 and then back to the value i require.

Any ideas?

Thanks..

-13 ? That must dim or you have a small screen. I've never closed the manual iris down that far, so no - haven't had that problem.

Woofer -

I'm using a GTX 980. I've found that it depends on the type of content you want to scale/render. For high bitrate 1080p it does require a lot of compute power to scale it to UHD via NGU Sharp. But when I playback UHD Blu-ray content (because it doesn't have to scale) I find I can still use NGU Sharp at the max settings to render the content without dropping frames.

Screen is a 143" Scope..  One of my 16:9 SDR profiles i use High Laser with the Iris at -13 ..

I know this probably isn't the right place given the context of this thread, but using MadVR for UHD Blu-ray playback is excellent for those with older e-shift HDR capable JVC projectors. You can choose to disable (or enable) sending the HDR flag via metadata. This is extremely handy because I don't need an HDFury Integral anymore to remove the flag so I can enable the dynamic iris.

You can see the option here:

There's also plenty of control to convert HDR to SDR:

For those who like to use lens memories, MadVR can automatically call up lens memories on any JVC projector. It analyses the video to detect the aspect ratio of the video content. It will pause the movie, switch lens memories and once it verifies the switch has been made, it will play the video:

You can even tell it which memory to choose. This makes switching back and forth between 16/9 and anamorphic content seamless and effortless. If you're using an anamorphic lens, it will also automatically enable a stretch mode when it detects anamorphic content :

So on top of the reference level scaling, there's a ton of cool features bundled in that can be useful for those of us with JVC projectors.

That's pretty slick. Maybe post that in the RS420 / 520 / 620 thread too.

I feel compelled to give an update on my Lumagen Pro.

When I raved about seeing so much more low APL detail I unfortunately failed to notice that I had the Panasonic dynamic range slider engaged (left from when I bypassed the Lumagen to compare).   Obviously this wasn't correct as it would have desaturated colors and blown out some highlights (something I started to notice that led me to check the slider).

It's still better with the Lumagen but now I feel I have to go back and do some more watching & comparing.

Thought I better get this out there before anyone ordered one based on my (now flawed) rave.  Sorry.

The Lumagen is mandatory, IMO, so no need to apologise :D

Regarding custom curves w/Arve tool vs Panasonic UB900 HDR slider for UHD BD on JVCs in general...

Can one achieve the same result with the Arve tool?  Does the UB900 HDR slider offer much value if you're doing curves?  I've got an Oppo 203 which I was going to keep and thinking of selling off the UB900 since Chad will be doing custom curves for my RS440, just wanted to get people's thoughts.

Well for one thing, the Panasonic is supposedly better than the Oppo so you could sell the Oppo and retain the feature.

When Kris was experimenting with Arve curves he eventually found that the best performance required a combination of the Panny slider at +4 and one of his curves.   That said, those who have had ChadB to create custom curves say that with his work the Panasonic slider is no longer needed.  I don't know of anyone who has compared both.

There is no comparison - the custom gamma curves as installed by Chad are far superior to just using the slider, which I now have set at zero. Makes HDR look like the projector has 10X as much contrast. 4K is brighter without lifting black levels, and shadow detail is also improved. I used GOTG2 as a test, and the difference was easy to see. I'm going to throw Wonder Woman on this week, as that HDR was ok before, but I'm guessing it looks brighter and far more dynamic now. The slider was ok, but there was only so much it could do. I'll probably thow Prometheus and Covenant on too for a few other torture test scenes.

So Craig, you got your projector calibrated again?  I gather Chad B. can get the best gamma curves for HDR that other calibrators can't just yet. :)

Yes, and yes. Although there may be other calibrators that do Arve's tool and custom gamma curves. But I can recommend Chad for a top notch JVC calibration 100%.

Can you share one of the curves he installed? I would love to know the parameters, there is only a finite amount of paramaters one can use in the Arve tool once you know what you are doing as to not push things too far, I wager that his curves are extremely close to the ones I am using.

I found Manni's curves too dark despite him accusing me of 'poorly designing' mine because, and this is funny, I left brightness on the table. Clearly he didn't actually look at them since mine are brighter than his :)

Do you want me to email his calibration notes ? I can.
