Craig has the Panasonic dynamic slider set to +4.  If you don't have this set on your Pansonic, the +3 Picture Tone works well.  Or, you can leave the Picture Tone at 0 and use the Panasonic.   Either one brightens up the picture.   Since you have more than 1 HDR source, you're probably better off with the Picture Tone. 

Just my opinion.  I'm no expert.

So there is a long shot that I might get this projector in the next couple of weeks. Does it seem silly for my environment?

If my calculations are correct i could be looking at 90 fl for HDR movies, surely that would be too bright?

I forgot to add that there is a manual iris, so in addition to using low or medium laser, you can use the manual iris to adjust brightness ( and increase contrast ). And I'm a big proponent of not running a laser projector at max output from the get go, just like a lamp projector. There is no way to get your lumens back unlike a lamp based projector. So I like running in low and medium laser, which extends the life of the laser to maybe 38,000 hours to half brightness. I never need to worry about dimming. Neither will you !

Has anyone tried to watch "Godless" on Netflix on their RS4500?  I found it unwatchable b/c of all of the low APL scenes.  Had to resort to my LG65B7P OLED    Which it looks fantastic on!

Very interesting.  I only have the RS400, but UHD/HDR BD's I have watched generally look pretty good with an Arve Custom Curve on top of JVC Autocal.

I watched Godless a couple of weeks ago, mainly on my Sony XBR75X900E, capable of both 4k and HDR, and it was spectacular.  Out of curiosity, I put it up on my JVC, with the same Custom Curve I use for UHD BD's (and with the source from a Roku Premiere+), and was pretty disappointed with what I was seeing.  Looked drab and lifeless compared to the Sony.

I do realize that these are 2 different beasts, in terms of potential brightness, but it did make me wonder if I needed to redo my Gamma Curve.

To hear you say the same thing with your RS4500 is interesting to me.  I'll be following to see what others report with their equipment.

Nope, I don't watch Netflix. I will say that " Atomic Blonde " on 4K BR and " Wind River " on Blu-ray looked amazing over the last couple of days. Never a scene where I wished it had better contrast.

I have atomic blond also it was wonderful.  Godless is just a low APL beast.  There are so many scenes indoors that for me I couldn’t  watch it.  It is an HDR feed.  Go try it out if you want to torture yourself.  The outdoor scenes look wonderful but most of the series is shot in Uber low APL that really requires lots of contrast. 

I’m not knocking the projector either because I love it but I gurantee any projector will struggle with much of Godless.  It’s also a phenomenal series!

I just played around with an RS640. Watched a bit of " Pacific Rim " 4K Blu-ray, and a bit of " Ghost in the Shell " 4K Blu-ray. Ghost didn't look much different on the 640 than on my RS4500, even with the iris cranked down to -8, and auto 2 on. Have to run the 640 in high lamp to equal medium laser. So I doubt " Godless " would look much better on an RS640.

I just checked out Godless.  I want to watch this show so bad but I started late and after watching the first 10 minutes I figured I'd skip ahead to catch more of the darker indoor scenes.

This reminds me a LOT of Unforgiven.  Perhaps also Ghost in the Shell.  I did not find it unwatchable though.  Many scenes were stunning.  Here's what I did to make it palatable:

Go to the HDR Gamma
- make sure dark Tone is at 7
- Set picture tone at 3 or 4
- Have Panasonic dynamic range slider at +4

Medium laser, close aperture to -5 or so to increase contrast

I'm sure the LG Oled looks better (I will look at that soon) but the above looked pretty decent on my RS4500.

Craig, you have the Panny, so you have Netflix HDR.   You're missing out if you don't take advantage of it.  Try it for a month.  Quality is pretty damn good.

Totally agree on Atomic Blonde 4k and Wind River.

Unwatchable was probably a little too harsh, but you cannot deny some of the dark scenes indoors are just really really hard to watch?  Once you view them on your OLED you will notice the difference in those scenes when you have infinite contrast available.  My setting are nearly identical to what you have above and I also use my Panny to stream Netflix.  I guess it depends on what your tastes are.   The scenes that are not low APL in Godless do look fantastic!

IMO opinion Netflix's picture is much better than Amazon's.  They also have a lot of content that supports Dolby Vision so if you have DV capable flat panels you can take advantage of that feature.  I am really impressed at how good streaming looks these days.  My AppleTV4K totally suprised me at how good the video looks on my RS4500 and LG OLEDs.  The audio is not up to snuff, but it is going to get a firmware update to support Atmos so it will be interesting to see how that actually sounds.

I watched a bit on my OLED after my post.  My OLED was never calibrated so keep that in mind (it's in my kitchen and it's used only for news or sports events).  Yes, it has great contrast and perhaps it's my settings but I found the contrast too much.  If I got close to make it immersive the dark scenes were too noisy (again, could be lack of calibration) and the highlights were fatiguing and unnatural.  I'll take my large screen and the RS4500 any day of the week.
