Sony VPL-VW285ES/385ES Thread

I just picked up a 285ES that popped up on Amazon. I should have it Wednesday according to Amazon Prime's delivery date estimate.

I would like to check out whether or not any of the issues I have with 4K SXRD have been addressed or lessened since the 665ES I had last. I may have to get in touch with Mirodk on "the other" forum somehow to get instructions from him again on what needs to be disabled to get rid of the factory set convergence which will lessen some of these artifacts. Anyone mind doing me a favor?

A lot of my sensing equipment is boxed up from my recent move, but I'll do my best to do a few measurements granted I find all of my equipment!

Thanks Javs! He gave me the instrructuons a long time ago when I had the 665ES but I can't access the PM to get it.

I'm excited to see if this new lens has better focus uniformity across the image.  In the center of the image on the previous 6xx models I've seen, pixel definition was generally very good but that performance trailed off as you got towards the edge of the image. One could make the argument that it would be next to impossible to see this issue with real world video content and Id agree, but at the price point of those earlier 6xx models ($15000 USD) it should have been performing better to at least the same level or better than the cheaper models offered from Epson and JVC.

I would also hope to see better native contrast, but I'm not holding my breath on that one.

Does this have a manual iris?  It's not like the 45ES I presume.

It has a fixed iris in the lens that is not adjustable. The only way to alter lumen output is to change the lamp setting. Or if someone was really desperate, they could always take advantage of zoom on the lens to alter how many lumens are leaving the projector.

Everything Projector Central reviews sounds outstanding, unless it's "expensive" and then they do their best to make it sound like a waste of money.  $5000 is pretty high on their price scale to really like, but I guess they're just excited about "native 4K".

Interesting that when they took contrast out of the equation, they found the XPR BenQ 8050 to be sharper than the 285.

It's interesting to see Sony do this with the 285ES and 385ES. Knowing that HDR requires a lot of brightness it's odd to see Sony lower lumen output instead of lowering the performance in other areas. Considering that eshift on the JVCs is already so good, it might be difficult to recommend this over a JVC. We're seeing more lumens, more contrast, more color saturation with very similar subjective image detail, but also a way to fine tune HDR via custom curves on the similarly priced JVCs.. It would be interesting to directly compare HDR between the two.

An RS620 / 640 is nearly as bright in low lamp as the VW285 is in high lamp !
