HDMI Cables for 4K Projectors That Work - Report Here
« on: November 11, 2016, 11:43:58 AM »
For those of us with 4K / 4K e shift projectors that are watching 4K source material successfully, please post here what you are using, and cable length etc., for the benefit of those new projector owners.

I'm using Monster Black Platinum HDMI cables ( sourced from Ebay and Amazon ). I have a 4' cable from my Samsung 4K UHD Blu Ray player to my Denon X7200WA, receiver,  another 4' Monster Black Platinum HDMI cable from the Denon to my HD Fury Integral, and a 16' Monster Black Platinum HDMI cable from the Integral to my JVC RS600 and my Sony VW600 ( one 16' cable to each projector from the two HDMI outs on the Integral ). While I mostly watch 4K UHD Blu Rays ( zero problems ), the other night I watch some 4K on YouTube through the built in app on the Samsung that was 60fps, and that too had zero issues. Played fine. What are the rest of you using ?

5 foot Blue Jeans Cable Series-FE Premium Certified from Samsung K8500 UHD player to HDFury Integral.
5 foot Blue Jeans Cable Series-FE Premium Certified from HDFury Integral to Denon x4200w AVR.
5 foot Blue Jeans Cable Series-FE Premium Certified from Directv C61K 4k Genie Mini Client to Denon x4200 AVR.

25 foot Blue Jeans Cable Series-1E from Denon x4200w AVR to JVC RS500 projector HDMI-1 input.

- The Series-FE cables are Premium Certified in lengths from 5 feet to 15 feet.

- The Series-1E is a thick 23.5 AWG cable.  Blue Jeans did not submit this cable for Premium Certification testing as they believed the connector to the thick cable core might fail in the tight loop wrap test.   Blue Jeans still recommends this cable over the FE at lengths over 15 feet.

I can confirm the 35ft Monoprice Cabernet Ultra Certified High Speed Active HDMI Cable works as advertised and has been tested on both a JVC DLA-RS500 and Sony VPL-VW665ES. I had no issues sending nearly 18GBps throughput content to the JVC and maxed out the 10.2 GBps inputs on the 665ES with ease.

I have received and tested the Monoprice "Certified Premium High Speed HDMI" cables in lengths of 3ft, 6ft, 10ft and 20ft (link below).  I tested the shorter lengths between my Samsung K8500 Ultra HD Blu-ray player and my Denon X6200W AVR.  The 20ft. length I tested between my Denon X6200W AVR and my JVC RS600 projector.  I tested using a 2160p/60Hz source output to put max. stress (i.e., data rates approaching 18 Gbps) on the HDMI connection.  I encountered no issues.  I also tested using a 20ft. cable plus a female-female HDMI coupler and another a 3 ft. cable between the Denon AVR and the JVC projector and this setup worked OK.  I've been informed by Monoprice that they have a new series of active HDMI cables in lengths of 25 ft. to 75 ft. coming out in the Feb. 2017 timeframe (assuming all goes well with their testing) that will work reliably for 18 Gbps signals.

I'm following Monoprice on the above mentioned cables. That's the time frame for my big upgrade. Will be posting a plan/build thread soon! I've been very happy with my Monoprice purchases.

Nice article!  Like I said, I've been following the high-speed stuff from Monoprice for a while, and this is the one I'm considering.

http://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=13759

The one David says doesn't pass the 18gbps test, isn't supposed to.  It's advertised as a 10.2gbps cable.

Comparison between Luxe Series CL3 Active HDMI® Cable,
Passive HDMI® Cable, and SlimRun™ AV Cable:

Luxe CL3 HDMI
Passive HDMI
SlimRun AV
Transmission Medium   Tin Plated Copper   Tin Plated Copper   Multi-Mode Fiber
Maximum Length   100 feet   100 feet   330 feet
Cable Thickness   7.5mm   11.5mm   5.0mm
Supports HDCP   ✓   ✓   ✓
Supports DDC   ✓   ✓   ✓
Maximum Bandwidth   18GBps*   10.2Gbps   10.2Gbps
Maximum Resolution   4K@60Hz*   720p   4K@60Hz
Weight**   7.2 lbs.   11.9 lbs.   4.4 lbs

Well, it didn't copy and paste so nicely, but you can see the Luxe cable at left.  The passive cable is in the middle, and the SlimRun on the right.  Also, further reading on the page shows what the "*" meant on the Luxe cable's 18gbps claim (on runs up to 50 ft only).  This should be well over what I'll need.

So far the Monster Black Platinum Ultimate HDMI cables I have, have worked perfectly with 4K 60fps and anything else I can throw at it. Mine are only 16', but the price on Ebay isn't bad, so longer ones may be worth trying.

I needed a 40' cable, so I went with a Celerity Fiber Optic cable, the first one I received was spotty, it wouldn't connect reliably, got a replacement and it has been solid for a couple weeks. With the ability to upgrade the ends I am hoping it can last quite a while.

I'm looking for a 45-50' cable for a coming 4K upgrade. I do have some shielded Cat 6 running from rack to my projector which is not in use and was installed as a hedge for this very purpose. So an HDMI over Cat adapter could be an option. I've seen the Celerity and I think for the price it may not be the best option.

Has anyone tried any of the passive fiber optic cables listed on Amazon from, for example, DTech (https://www.amazon.com/dp/B01HI6PCCO/ref=psdc_202505011_t3_B00M85ZZ3W) or Ruipro? Both have a 50' cable listed for around $180 which claims to do 4K/60. Each currently has 2 positive reviews, which isn't a lot of feedback.

Amazon does have a good return policy, if you want to try it. You could then be the 3rd positive review ( or the first negative one ).

I have a friend who picked up that Ruipro and it's working for them 4K/60. You can always return it.

Great point about the ease of returning it to Amazon if it doesn't work correctly. (As long as it's sold via Amazon, at least.)

Once I have things about ready to set up (gonna grab one of the closeout RS-500s) I'll pull the trigger on one of those and try it out. Craig, expect a call soon, I'm just waiting til the current cycle on my credit card closes on Friday lol!

I'm passing this along.  I've just returned my 30' Monoprice Luxe Active cable.  It seemed to do well for the most part, but isn't passing what it's supposed to.  I torture tested by forcing 4K/60 4:4:4 8 bit (which is just under 18gbps) on regular blu-ray with my Oppo 203.

I had it and a "Certified Premium" 3 foot cable from Monoprice, testing together.  The 3 footer would.  The Luxe 30 would not...
