Yep last night!   

It was as good as the other two but the HDR picture seemed just a smidge darker at times (there were a few times in the dark ship & caves I thought I detected some crush but nothing bad).  All in all close if not reference but the real treat was the nice use of the popping in HDR and the Atmos track which was outstanding (especially when those bug ships started flying all around the Enterprise during the first attack... as well when the spacecraft crashed!).

Great night of movie watching (A/V Nirvana!).

I watched " Sicario " last night on my RS600. Good crime thriller, great sound track, and I thought it had a very detailed, clean looking picture. I did not watch it with HDR. Black levels were very good - although over all I thought it looked a little dark. The sunset scene when they head for the drug tunnel was stunning ! I must say the I am very pleased with 4K UHD on the RS600. I wish I could wave a magic wand and turn all my Blu Rays into 4K UHD discs right now !

In a year or two you will be able to do that for many of your BD's, but it will not be a magic wand that you will be waving to do so. It will be your magic credit card on Black Friday and it may heat it up a little bit.

I've noticed several comments about HDR causing a dimmer/darker picture and some not even using the HDR, which I thought was one of the more important advantages of the UHD format over resolution.  Is this a problem with JVC pj or a UHD player or combination or simply HDR darkens the image regardless of display/player?

Yeah but remember Craig this one was one of the few 4K DI movies out there (not sure I've seen a bad one yet but 2K DI "remastered BDs" to 4K is a bit of a different story... a crapshoot).

Front projectors do not have the light output to do full HDR. Also because HDR is not set up for front projection (can't be due to too many variables), it requires some tinkering with the settings. It will get better, but may never be completely plug and play. Now if everybody's setup had the exact same light (FL) on the screen and it was bright enough, then it could be standardised, but that is not going to happen, due to different size, different aspect ratio, different gain, different projectors and different prefered brightness.

The issue you're referring to is a somewhat complicated one. What it really boils down to is the display and/or player not properly communicating or enabling the proper protocol for display. Initially JVC projectors had this issue because when they first shipped the HDR mode was meant to tone map HDR content to a Dolby Vision gamma curve, which is quite different than an HDR10 gamma curve. The two are setup for two different nit peak brightness levels (10000 vs 1000 nits iirc). JVC fixed this with a firmware update quite a while ago.

Current issues revolve around the player not sending the display proper meta data about the content it's senidng, improper tone mapping or the player not receiving proper EDID information from the display. On top of that HD BDs are currently being mastered differently by each studio so there needs to be tweaks made every time you watch something. Essentially we're in the early days of the HDR standard(s) and it's not one company's fault for things not looking proper. Give it a year or two and I think we'll start to see things a bit more "plug n' play" as the CE industry as a whole figure how to properly master and implement things on the software side.

In general I watch all of my few 4K UHD Blu Rays I have so far without HDR, but with the wide color gamut. Thank you HD Fury Integral ! HDR raises black levels too much for my tastes. I find the wider color gamut, increased resolution and cleaner looking picture ( much less video noise on the 4K movies i have ) to be enough of an upgrade. HDR with it's raising of black levels is to me ( on my RS600 ) a downgrade. YMMV.
