Today is a very sad day for our family. Our loyal companion for the past 12.5 years is making his way to doggy heaven. He was diagnosed with Cushings Disease at the start of the pandemic, which is a tumor on his adrenal gland. Because of this he is always hungry and thirsty and it puts a lot of strain on his other organs. A few weeks ago he took a turn for the worst and wasn't himself anymore and we took him to the vet and found out his blood pressure was through the roof and they discovered a tumor on one of his kidneys.
Sadly, the doctor told us he only had weeks to live so we flew our daughter up from LA to spend some time with him before making the humane choice of putting him down later this afternoon. This is the hardest decision we've ever had to make but we know we are doing the right thing for him so he won't be in pain anymore. We'll always love you Rollo and thank you for your companionship these past 12+ years.

Sorry to hear about Rollo. It's always hard losing a pet. I still miss my Golden. It's been years since I had a pet. Now we have a kitten. Cherish the fun times you had. A toast to Rollo !

Thanks Craig. Very tough day and I know time will make it better.

So sorry. It’s the worst. Enjoy the memories you had and know he is resting now

Sorry to hear that, David. Friend of mine was telling me today about having to put down their 13 year old lab yesterday. They are so loved and don't get long enough with us.

Thanks. We watched some videos today when he was a puppy and brought smiles to all of our faces.

I totally agree...we don't get enough time with them.

Sorry to hear the news, David. Pets are family, no doubt about it.

My condolences from one dog guy to another. I know the feeling.

Hey Dave, so so sorry to hear! Our Pugs are like our children, as we never had any children…I never cried so much as when our last Pug passed…We always have 2 pugs and rotate…We bring a puppy pug in when we figure the older Pug has 5 or so years left…When the older pug passes, the puppy is 5 and we bring another puppy in…That way we are never “childless”…Sooooooo sorry to hear man…Enjoy the memories…
PS Our oldest Pug bonded to me…I swear she would lay at my grave if I passed…

So sorry about this, Dave.
We need a few more emojis available than the simple "like" we have now! :'(:'(

I have to say, this has been extremely painful and emotional. I didn't sleep well last night at all and at 6 am this morning I "heard" Rollo barking to be let outside to do his business. The mind plays tricks on you like that (I guess). I'm not sure if we'll get another dog anytime soon because we are at the age where my wife wants to travel more and join me on business trips and with a dog at home, it was too much to handle. We didn't want him going to a kennel...he was our third kid and was treated as such.

My wife & I have 2 rescues. We started with rescues in 2014 when we moved into our current house, which has a fenced back yard and some nice neighborhood streets for walking. Our first one was a Corgi-Terrier mix about 5-6 years old, and was just a terrific dog - well mannered and started picking up tricks and play including frisbee fetch, which I loved. But 6 months later she got sick and after she didn't respond to initial treatments, an x-ray revealed advanced pancreatic cancer. They euthanized her that day. My wife bawled for a week and it was rough for me too. We don't have kids so in just 6 months she'd become our "kid".
We watched the 2019 movie Togo tonight (via Disney+). Wonderful story and not as sappy as some dog movies.

Thanks for sharing your story Paul and that must have been really hard. We rescued Rollo as a puppy...he and his littermates were abandoned with their mother when the pups were only a few days old. Our friends "hosted" them and sure enough, we went over to look and fell in love with him. A few weeks later, we took him home and he gave us nothing but joy for the next 12 years. If we get another dog, it will definitely be a rescue dog.
