The JVC firmware update version 3.5 is now available as a free download for the DLA-RS1000, DLA-RS2000 & DLA-RS3000. This improves our impressive Frame Adapt HDR (Dynamic Tone Mapping) feature and adds the new Theater Optimizer along with several improvements to the menu for easier operation by our customers.

Summary on using Theater Optimizer with Ultra Wide Screens. I hope this adds clarity.
There are two basic methods. Lens memory or Anamorphic lens.
Lens Memory:
This is simple. Use the actual 16x9 projected image.
For example. You have a 120” 2.35:1 screen. 46.9” height x 110.4” width.
Your 16x9 image is 46.9” x 83.5”. 96” diagonal. Round up to 100”.
Your 2.35 image is actually a 62.1” x 110.4”. 127” diagonal. This is a 16x9 image where the black bars are simply above and below the screen. Round up to 130”.
Anamorphic.
A little more complicated, but not that much.
For example. You have a 120” 2.35:1 screen. 46.9” height x 110.4” width.
Using an old school expansion lens, your actual 16x9 image is 46.9” x 83.5”. 96” diagonal. Round up to 100”. Turn on Anamorphic Scaling (A or B) in the JVC menu. Then set Theater Optimizer.
Using a newer compression lens, your actual 16x9 image is 62.1” x 110.4”. 127” diagonal. It is then compressed. Round up to 130”. Turn on Anamorphic Scaling (C or D) in the JVC menu. Then set Theater Optimizer.
Remember that you need to “set” Theater Optimizer after inputting all other settings, and you need to do it for each memory/install mode.
Also, please note regarding anamorphic. There are two different scenarios. Expansion lens and compression lens. Expansion with a sled will have one memory with anamorphic scaling and one without. With a fixed lens, each of those scenarios will have 2 different anamorphic modes (A&B or C&D). Each of those anamorphic modes will be saved per installation mode and the customer will just recall installation modes when changing aspect ratio.

Looking for an assist. I have an RS-3000 that I got from Mike G. this past spring and the previous DTM software was already loaded. Not that it matters but my bulb has 264 hours on it. I have been trying to update to the latest software for 3 hours with no success. I keep getting the message "USB flash drive is not inserted or connected". I have tried FOUR different flash drives, reformatted all of them to FAT32 and followed the update procedure in every detail. I am at a loss. Any suggestions. Is there a way to "backdoor" the update? If I could get the USB port to recognize being plugged into my laptop is there a way to accomplish it that way? I really have no idea what is going on so any insight would be appreciated! Thanks in advance!

Try this ( from our friends at JVC ) -
Please ensure the folder is in the root directory of the USB stick.
Please plug in the USB stick and walk away for 5-10 minutes. Then try running the update. Do not bring up the OSD until after the 5 or 10 minutes.
Sometimes it takes a while for the projector to acknowledge the USB stick depending on the size.

Thank you for the reply, I did reformat all 4 sticks. I will try the plug in and wait and will report back. For what it is worth when I do plug in the USB stick it (the stick) flashes twice so there is that...

Okay, so I did all of the suggestions with 2 different USB sticks. One 8GB and one 4GB. Wiped both clean and reformatted to FAT32. Let the projector on without pulling up the OSD for 40 minutes on each one. Still the same message of not inserted/recognized. I then powered the projector off leaving one of the USB's inserted. Let it sit for 20 minutes without pulling up the OSD and still nothing. Same message! Any other ideas? I can't believe an empty 4GB USB that is empty except for the update is causing it not to even acknowledge the USB-drive. Any other ideas?

Maybe try a 3rd different USB thumb drive - that's all I can suggest.

When you unzip the file, it gives you an unzipped folder. This is NOT the folder you put on the flash drive. You have to open the Unzipped folder and put the second folder onto the flash drive (Craig posted a picture of the actual files that are in that folder).

What I believe is being lost in translation is the projector is NOT saying "The folder or file cannot be found", which would indicate it is at least acknowledging drive, but instead. the "The drive is not inserted or cannot be recognized".

I used a Lexar flashdrive (16GB). It's the same one I used previously on both Oppo updates and JVC.

What are the chances of having 3 bad thumb drives? A Lexar, Verbatim, and Western Digital? I would say, slim to none, and slim just left! It has to be a bad USB/Maintenance port on the projector, wouldn't you think?

They are not necessarily “bad”, but the projector is very picky. When I did my FW3.1 update I had to try quite a few thumb drives. The smaller ones work better.

Once you find one that works, make a note of it and put it aside.

Got it. It finished all good.
Have everything set for my CinemaScope and hdtv installation modes (aspect ratios). Now I just need to update my Netflix, Netflix +, and Netflix ++ installation modes. Note that I have a CinemaScope screen and so I have an installation mode for each of the 5 aspect ratios I encounter. Then each installation mode is tied to a physical button on my harmony remote! Extremely happy with my move from the RS500 to the RS2000 for the install functionality alone.
@Craig - thanks for being a great sales person. With the new bulb I just put in I will recalibrate gamma and color at some point.

Insert it before the projector starts. Insert after it starts. Nothing. The same message of "The USB drive is not inserted or recognized". Let them sit for 20 minutes with projector running. Still the same. Literally been 3 hours not including purchasing new drives. There is NO WAY that there is not something wrong with the USB input on my projector unless I am completely missing something. What am I missing? This is a total of 9 drives, that have nothing on them, in a variety of capacities and brands, that my laptop recognizes as just having THE FOLDER UD_B2A1 on them my projector does not. Any other ideas besides buy more USB drives until I find one the projector happens to have an affinity for?

I have tried to do the firmware upgrade. However, under PICTURE MODE there is not FRAME ADAPT HDR to choose.
I tried to redo the firmware upgrade but the projector will not allow it.
If I do a factory reset, will this delete the firmware upgrade so that I can redo it?
I resolved the issue.

I'd check the other forum for anyone who is close to you that has a working USB with their JVC and see if you can either pick it up or have it mailed to you (1 day shipping if in the same state via USPS). Just a thought. That way it can be ruled out that it's your USB on your projector.

Thank you for the suggestion David. I will say that JVC tech support has been great (kudos to Mike G who was the conduit). I have a FaceTime with one of their engineers tomorrow and if that does not work out I will try you idea. JVC suggested using another laptop which did not work either. Hopefully it get resolved and thanks again for you suggestion!

He unplugged the projector for about 10 minutes. Then powered it on and while powering up, plugged in the USB drive.

Yep. I am still on 2.10 firmware. Tried 3.10 and it messed up my auto switching of SDR to HDR. So I went back to 2.10. Right now, I do not have to do anything, other than pop a movie in or select a streaming movie. SDR or HDR is switched automatically and even aspect ratio is changed automatically on my scope screen. Have never had it working so smooth. Don't want to lose that.

I have had difficulty loading updates since the day I received my NX5 last April. JVC's USB implementation is awful. I have tried no fewer than seven USB A 2.0 and USB A 3.0 thumb drives as well as multiple computers, all of which fail. The only thumb drive that actually works is a Vivatar SD/MicroSD USB A/C thumb drive. JVC technical support is not particularly helpful and acts as though you are either obtuse or incompetent, when it is JVC's poor hardware or software engineering that creates the issue. This is the first JVC projector I have owned, and am unimpressed with the quality. The out of the box calibration was awful and I had a bulb explode after nine months of use.

My ritual is make sure the projector has been off a few minutes, then turn it on and wait about 5 seconds then plug the USB stick in the service receptacle and clap your hands three times, jump up and down two times, and spin around once. You can probably skip the last three steps but prayer sometimes helps ;).

It is spin around once clockwise and twice counter clockwise. As other said, once you find a USB that works, set aside and use anytime you need to update. It will work every time.

From JVC - If your using Auto Cal, be sure you turn off the screen adjust.
I had done an Auto Cal, and noticed that I still had a red push. On checking, I had mistakenly left the screen adjust “on” with code 114 for SI Slate 1.2. As soon as I turned screen adjust “off”, the push went away, and I had a nice, neutral grayscale.
It helps to have a test disc or other source with a gray pattern you can use to check this.
Depending on the code that was being used, this could also manifest itself as a green or a blue push.

This firmware includes bug fixes - it's recommended that everyone update their projector.

V3.10 to a newer firmware resets many things. V3.50 to V3.52 should not.
Always take a photo of any important settings. Even if you never do a firmware update! Just in case.
There are a variety of small bug fixes from V3.50 to V3.51 to V3.52 that make V3.52 worthwhile. It fixes an issue with auto cal., and a possible HDMI synch issue which a few people have experienced.

It's my understanding (I could be wrong) that neither 3.50 nor 3.51 changed anything with respect to easily configuring the HDR Auto-select Picture Mode for use with the Envy or Lumagen - specifically assigning a 'power' gamma like 2.4. To do this, you need to use the Autocal Software to have an Imported value of 2.4.
I would like to be surprised that 3.52 fixes this, and makes it easy to assign a power gamma, but I'm not expecting this.
I'm thinking this is probably what you were asking about, but again I could be wrong.

The Envy/Lumagen can still be properly set up to work with 3.5x firmware - it just requires some extra effort with use of the free JVC Autocal software. So not a big deal. But I still wish JVC would make the slight change that would be needed to make it as simple as it is with 3.1x.
Making direct comparisons of JVC's DTM vs Envy/Lumagen DTM, in your own home, would be great if you can manage to work that out. Given that the JVC would need to use different Picture Modes, with an HDMI handshake required, you won't be able to go back and forth between the 2 instantly. But hopefully quickly enough that you can still make useful comparisons.
I don't recall if you do, but if you have a Scope screen, that would be a pretty big incentive to use an external video processor. The black bar detection simplifies watching content with any aspect ratio, and in particular with the Envy, has superb ability to handle Subtitles with scope content (if that's important to you). And if you have or add an A-Lens, the benefit increases even more.

The auto aspect ratio feature on the Lumagen is slick with a scope screen - although the HDR dynamic tone mapping is the real meat and potatoes.

I have the new 3.52 firmware And I have had it for a week. My Macintosh 170 and my Apple tv Among other components had trouble with the handshake. That is I got nothing on the screen. Macintosh did upgrade their firmware and then we called JVC and they sent over the beta version. Finally, The components are linked. The only problem I have had, on one occasion, what is my Verizon cable did not link. I then went to HDMI 2 On the projector and then immediately returned it to HDMI one and the picture came back. Again they told us this was the beta version and I suggest that if you are not having trouble with your handshaking not to bother

Ive asked before in the other thread but no luck. Ive reached around 1000 hrs and have had no issues with Theatre Optimiser Mid until now. We watched the SW AOTC Ep 2 and there is a scene where Anakin and Padme are in the lake house at night. That scene was quite Dark I noticed it straight away there was an issue. I reverted back to Auto ( 5 steps ) and it was fine. I tried again this time with the matrix ( The deja vu scene The Cat ) and once they start running upstairs it was quite dark. When I reverted to Auto it was perfect. I remember both of these scenes and they were never that dark. My son even noted it as well. Any ideas why that would be the case ?
Personally I believe they should not have a selection in TO ( Low Mid or High ) it should of just been TO where you put in your details and it works within the range between high and low. Who knows maybe next update. For now Im going to have to rely on the metadata and use Auto which I find the 5 steps does a much better job than the previous 3.
Im hoping at the end of the year Im able to purchase a Lumagen, 🤞

Ive asked before in the other thread but no luck. Ive reached around 1000 hrs and have had no issues with Theatre Optimiser Mid until now. We watched the SW AOTC Ep 2 and there is a scene where Anakin and Padme are in the lake house at night. That scene was quite Dark I noticed it straight away there was an issue. I reverted back to Auto ( 5 steps ) and it was fine. I tried again this time with the matrix ( The deja vu scene The Cat ) and once they start running upstairs it was quite dark. When I reverted to Auto it was perfect. I remember both of these scenes and they were never that dark. My son even noted it as well. Any ideas why that would be the case ?
Personally I believe they should not have a selection in TO ( Low Mid or High ) it should of just been TO where you put in your details and it works within the range between high and low. Who knows maybe next update. For now Im going to have to rely on the metadata and use Auto which I find the 5 steps does a much better job than the previous 3.
Im hoping at the end of the year Im able to purchase a Lumagen, 🤞
I think you're seeing an example of where the basically quite good DTM of the JVC's will fall short in some situations. I found the same thing on my NX7 (although that was with pre-TO firmware) on a regular basis, and while the overall performance of JVC's DTM was quite good, I was frustrated knowing that some movies and/or scenes would benefit from tinkering with settings.
This is one of the reasons I ended up getting the madVR Envy (in addition to needing/wanting the Aspect Ratio control, especially helpful with the DCR A-Lens in use as well). It handles everything I've thrown at it so far extremely well, and I no longer feel the need to 'tinker' with the settings. I just sit back and watch the show. The Lumagen would provide a similar benefit, but after due consideration, I opted to go the Envy route.

I’ll have to agree. I guess will see if JVC can do another update to improve what they have especially with the TO. But what they have is still okay just requires some tweaking.

I've been extremely pleased with the Lumagen tone mapping. And other features.

Tonight I did some more testing with Theatre Optimiser and I’ve been using scene by scene. Anyway I changed it back to Frame by Frame and the scenes I had issues with were perfect. So scene by scene with TO can cause issues. How and why ? Who knows. I was kinda bothered by it to be honest I didn’t think between those two settings it did anything but looks like it does.
