Title: 4K Movies you own or must have.
Post by: NBPk402 on December 07, 2016, 06:48:23 PM
I am just starting to buy 4K movies, and thought it would be nice to see what 4K movies people have, and if they were happy they got the 4k version.

So far I have Star Trek Beyond, and Jason Bourne. I have only been able to watch them on BR as i don't have a 4K player yet (we do have a 4k FP in our family room though for when we get a 4K player or I figure out how to rip them to the NAS in 4k).

What 4K movies do you have, and was it worth it to get them over the BR?

I'll chime in again tomorrow after I experiment tonight with some new ones, but right off the bat, all three Star Trek reboots really look great to me on 4K UHD BR.

The Revenant - not as great an improvement, but the color looks more realistic. The Blu Ray is already " top tier " picture wise.

Deadpool - detail is better on the 4K, but again - being a new movie, it's already " top tier " picture wise.

From what you and Travis and I saw, Pacific Rim is a big improvement over Blu Ray, as is The Great Gatsby.

More tomorrow.

Thanks Craig, this def helps me decide whether it is worth it to upgrade to a 4K movie if i already have the BR version. Did you get Jason Bourne yet?

The Bourne movies - all the Matt Damon ones anyway, are filtering in over the next week or two ! I skipped the Jeremy Renner one, due to lame reviews.

I have all of them, but only the latest one in 4K...anxious to hear how it is in 4K.

Sicario
Revenant
Pacific rim
Lucy
Star Trek into darkness
Dead pool

And watch secret life of pets. Could be the best looking animated feature in 4k

Have you compared any of them to the BR version...curious as to whether or not they are worth buying over the BR only version (I already have the BRs).

Is the first Star Trek (2009) UHD BD still an upgrade over the Blu?  Someone on another forum told me it had noticeable compression artifacts.

I think it looks better on 4K myself. Haven't noticed those artifacts.

Thoughts on watching some of my new 4K Blu Rays last night -

The Hunger Games - the first movie doesn't look much better than the Blu Ray ( which I knew from reviews ), the 2nd one looks a bit better, and the 3rd and 4th movies definitely look better.

From bluray.com - "The Hunger Games: Catching Fire is presented on 4K UHD with a 2160p transfer in 2.40:1 (kind of interestingly, the 4K UHD version does not "expand" to 1.78:1 for the actual games sequences, though I didn't notice any problematic framing as a result). " - at least the variable aspect ratio is gone. Fine by me.

Mad Max - Fury Road. I used to prefer the Blu Ray on my Sony VW600. I liked the motion better, and there was some video noise present on the JVC. With the 4K Blu Ray, the motion looks as good or better on the JVC, and I didn't see the noise. This would be my preferred way to watch it.

Lucy. Lucy already looked top tier on Blu Ray. Now, those long cityscape scenes look even more detailed and solid. The big improvement for me - motion looks far better on the JVC now than the Sony VW600 ( which was the Sony's strength in my opinion ). Motion is clear and solid on the 4K Blu Ray.

Oblivion is another top tier Blu Ray. I did see more picture noise on the JVC RS600 with the Blu Ray in the past, and preferred to watch this on my Sony VW600, except the dark scenes were compromised. I think that - despite reports the the 4K Blu Ray isn't as detailed due to filtering, looks slightly better overall due to less video noise on the 4K disc when watched on my RS600.

That's all I have right now !

Although the details were better on oblivion 4K most scenes were actually sharper on BD

The Samsung K8500 came in as planned yesterday, got connected in without a problem and has played the few discs I tried (BR, CD) and the one UHD I currently have (the remaining long list is all "wishlist") without issues.

The UHD movie is Independence Day -- there is nothing else I have seen more often over these years.   I have to recommend it (it's the only one!).  Seriously, I DO recommend it.  It made the non-Fake list and does look awfully good.  And the soundtrack in DTS:X is awesome!

My Vizio is early UHD and won't handle HDR (at least as a norm), and I haven't had time to play with that yet, but the image is just amazing.  Since the box includes both the UHD and the BR, it's easy to play and compare both.  In my mind (yes, word carefully chosen), the UHD is clearly better.  Foreground faces appear to have an almost 3D relief where the BR is definitly a flat 2D.  This adds just a touch of realism to the whole movie.  I had to keep looking because I really didn't believe it.  So while I know its all being upscaled on the tv, I would have to suggest that the image I see in the UHD copy is better than the BR.

So someone PLEASE check it out and come back and challenge me if need be.  But meanwhile, after the sun sets and I put the sound absorbing blinds down for best audio effect, I will once again be off enjoying one of the great entertainment experiences of our time.

Edit:  After writing the above, I went off to see if my opinion was shared.  Try this review on for size:  http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Independence-Day-4K-Blu-ray/151490/

I am waiting on the Oppo 203 to get my first UHD player.  I have purchased ONE and only one UHD BD......I haven't watched it (in any version), and didn't see it in theaters.....

Batman V Superman!!!!!!!!!!!!

I know, it tanked in theaters.....I'm a fan of both franchises, and I swore to my buddy (and my movie sidekick daughter) that I wouldn't watch it until we saw it on the big screen in the new home theater!!!!!

It's like saving yourself for marriage, except not "quite" as much fun.....

This is one that, based on what I heard about filming and transfer (so dark), as well as not having an Atmos track, I went good ol' 1080 Blu...Still haven't seen it yet, though!

It did get a bit of an improvement via 4K according to bluray.com -

http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Arrival-4K-Blu-ray/168185/#Review

And the price wasn't much different from the Blu Ray when I ordered it, so we will see. And seeing as a have a native 4K projector, I had to give it a shot.

The 4K movies on UHD Blu Ray are stuck at 212 titles right now - they were at 211 for a couple of weeks. I guess I'll be patient - The 5th Element in July on 4K may herald a new round of titles - especially with all the great new movies coming out this year ( like the new Blade Runner ) !

Yeah, new 4k releases are coming at a lot slower rate than I (from my isolated, self-centered position) expcted.   Though frankly we're holding still trying to catch up with disc bought/received as far back as Christmas!  Partly that's the Game of Thrones deluge and, just recently, it's a hold due to a knee replacement (THAT had a bigger impact than anticipated, but pretty much getting back in the game after a week).  Get through all this and start renting picks from the 212 and go from there.  LOTS to pick from when I get going...

I picked up the BR of Fifth Element with Atmos when it went on big sale last year ($8.99).  One of my mainstreams.  In 4k, that will be a rental for me -- hard to imagine the UHD will blow away the upscaled BR.  But as you say, it may kick off a round of releases.  And we have yet to see what DV releases will provide us -- aside from potential equipment/connectivity issues that is.

I specifically did not pick that up, since if I'm buying that movie again, it had better be re-mastered on a 4K UHD disc. Just 4 more months and we will see if they did a worthy job remastering it too. And I'm waiting for Leon too - same deal.

Now would be a good time to catch up on some of the older 4K titles.  Best Buy has a number of them at $14.99.

Suicide Squad
John Wick
Sicario
Oblivion
Lucy
Lone Survivor
Gods of Egypt
The Last Witch Hunter
Snow White and the Huntsman
Ender's Game
Now You See Me
The Bourne discs except for Jason Bourne
The Hunger Games discs except for Mockingjay Part 2
The Expendables
Divergent
Insurgent

Note that these discs show a shipping charge.   But after choosing store pickup, I was then able to change to free shipping during checkout.

I enjoyed Gods of Egypt.   Mainly for its picture quality.   And because actress Courtney Eaton who played Zaya was also in Mad Max Fury Road as Cheedo the Fragile.   While her acting skills will hopefully improve, she is quite easy to watch.

Suicide Squad looks much better now that I don't have to use Gamma D on my RS500.

I love that movie ! That's a Black Friday double dip and sell the Blu Ray. I think my tactic will be if i have it already, and the 4K disc gets a review that indicates it is a jump in quality, it goes in the Amazon wish list for Black Friday sales . If it's a new movie I would have bought as a Blu ray anyway, I'll just pick that up as they hit $ 24.00 or so.

I'm certainly looking forward to reading some reviews on this to see if they did a good enough job upgrading the film to 4K to make it worth re-buying. I'll add The 5th Element and Leon to that list.

Pretty good review - " Shot entirely on digital cameras capable of native 4K, which was later mastered into a 4K intermediate, the transfer is noticeably more detailed, exposing every negligible blemish and pore in the entire cast. The androids, too, come with an outstanding lifelike complexion and texture, and Ava's mesh body is razor-sharp. Sadly, I detected several instances of mild aliasing in a couple computer monitors and the floor lighting inside Ava's room. Nevertheless, the 2160p video is a terrific, excellent improvement. "

The collection slowly grows ! Not all of them are shown - up to 39 titles. Closing in on 10% of the collection in 4K !

http://www.dvdreview.com/2017/03/ex-machina-comes-4k-uhd-june/

Claiming that the Ex Machina UHD disc will be released June 6 at $22.99.    That low price actually concerns me a bit.

I got this disc yesterday. The price I paid at Amazon was $16.77 ! And the good news is it has a more detailed looking, and a much cleaner picture, which is what I had hoped for. The Blu-ray had a lot more video noise - the UHD BR has none. Color me impressed with the improvement !  The color looks outstanding too! I only had a little time to preview it, but I hope to be able to watch the entire movie again soon.

Large number of movies coming on 4K UHD Blu-ray this year. I could easily end 2017 with over 70 4K titles and 15% of my movie collection on 4K - http://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/070517-0800 (http://thedigitalbits.com/columns/my-two-cents/070517-0800)

So many of my favorite titles too - The Matrix, Gladiator, The Dark Knight Trilogy, Interstellar, Inception, Gravity - can't wait !!

Now Interstellar is the big surprise!  But will Nolan cave to Atmos?  Guess I'll have to remove the BR from my Wishlist -- definitely will get the UHD.

I expected (with nothing more than common sense) that two of the biggest Disney movies would get UHD -- The Guardians 2 and Pirates: Dead Men.  Now will they double down and do it with Dolby Vision?

I agree-- lots to like in that list of probable UHD releases.

Not sure about Dolby Vision, but with a projector, it doesn't matter to me. It will be an interesting year !

I've had Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle UHD on pre-order with Amazon since early Jan.  Since then, they say not available, unknown when.  Same over on Best Buy, but they now say the UHD will be released on 3/20.  The UHD Jumanji is spectacular and I've heard so much about the new movie, I'll just hang on.  Besides, was paid for by an Amazon return.   ;D

Edit 2/10/2018:  Well, ask and ye...  This morning I got an update from Amazon -- Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle to be delivered 3/20.  Should have posted that weeks ago...

Have you had time to compare with the regular Blu-ray?

Most (not all) reviews have said that the 4k version offers fairly minimal improvement on both video and audio fronts, so I've been thinking of skipping the 4k and going for the regular blu-ray on this one.

no i wasnt able to take screenshots either....I was watching with my son. i havent read that at all btw from any reputable source (bluray.com is the only one to the contrary...but i dont consider them credible).  in fact each source i have read agreed its the new standard for animation for 4k UHD.

I've definitely seen mixed opinions on that.  Some interesting discussion on the 'other' forum, where Ralph Potts and Dave Vaughan, both of whom I respect, both report that the UHD version didn't offer that much above the regular bluray.

For example, see this post, which references one of the reviews claiming it to be reference UHD material, and the ones before and after:

Coco UHD Post (http://www.avsforum.com/forum/187-official-avs-foruma-blu-ray-disc-reviews/2959044-coco-ultra-hd-blu-ray-review.html#post55760412)

I don't have either, so have no opinion.  Just curious to see if you had any comparison observations.

When I get a second I’ll give it a try.

FWIW Ralph potts is on my no respect list. He cans his reviews and reuses reviews for other discs. He’s a farce and more of a fluff reviewer

So to me. Coco Blu-ray isn’t close to the4k

The colors aren’t as vibrant. In the land of the dead in Blu-ray they are just colors. In 4K they are glowing colors the way they should be. Neon.

There is a flat 2d look to the Blu-ray. The 4K is very 3D

Hope that helps

Don't forget DTS:X MSTR if your AVR supports it.  Those new speakers can be used for DTS:X as well.   The Harry Potter UHD discs have really good mixes.   Atomic Blonde as well.

I do have Battleship in DTS:X. Reviews are poor but I think it is a entertaining movie without having to think too hard, which for me is a plus :)

Don't forget DTS:X MSTR if your AVR supports it.  Those new speakers can be used for DTS:X as well.   The Harry Potter UHD discs have really good mixes.   Atomic Blonde as well.

DTS does sound great. Atomic blonde has a dynamite sound track ( I like the movie a lot too ) !!

Yes I am really hoping that the Nad 777v3 will come out with a firmware update to support the DTS:X format.

This is THE only negative about my NAD 758 v3 avr. Cause it’s sound outstanding!!! Just needs to get the dts—x then it’s perrfect

Late to the 4K party, so virtually all of my shiny's so far are Blu-Ray, but I previously bought 4 Blu-Rays that included 4K discs in the package, so those will be first up:  Battleship, Bladerunner 2049, Guardians of the Galaxy 2,  and Passengers.  Happy to see that two of them are on Craig's short list.   👍

Is 4K movie streaming a decent approximation of the disc experience, and are any of the 4K streaming services clearly better than others?

I really like all three of those. Haven't seen Battleship.  Can't say regarding streaming.

I don't know if it's been mentioned in this thread already, but I just watched Bohemian Rhapsody for the first time, and it was just incredible!  The music was spectacular, totally immersive, crystal clear, room-thumping bass, and was as close to being present in a concert environment as I've experienced. I thought the movie itself was also tremendous - deeply moving. This is the type of movie that we create our Home Theaters to experience!

Watched it last night with my wife and 3 other couples. Everybody loved it ! I even have a few of them coming back next Wed. for a repeat showing ! And it looked awesome on the RS4500 that was just calibrated by Kris Deering ! Stunning picture and sound. That movie needs a sequel now !

Apocalypse Now Final Cut
40th Anniversary 6 Disc Edition

All three versions are included in 4K and Atmos; Theatrical and Redux on one disc with seamless branching, and Final Cut on its own disc.

I watched the 3 hour Final Cut version last night in HDR10 and Atmos sound.  The 4K remaster looks fantastic.  The Atmos soundtrack had me glancing up at the ceiling when helicopters flew over.

I will watch the other versions in reverse order as well; Redux and then Theatrical cut.

A great addition to my collection.  At an absolute bargain price.

An aside: It has been a long time since I last watched this movie.  This was the first watch where I recognized the young Harrison Ford in his small role as a geeky officer.

I'm probably never going to own all 22 films, but I have consulted my movie nut friend so as to fill in the key must watch ones I've been missing ( Captain America ones for instance ), and I do want to replace several I have on Blu-ray with 4K versions.
