As with many DC characters Clayface has had many incarnations. The first was in. 1940. Clay face here was Basil Karlo, make up artist. He used his make up to create many disguises as he did his robberies.
In 1960 they introduced a new character, Matt Hagen, who was a scuba diver who discovers a mysterious fountain. This fountain enabled him to become a Shapeshifter for 48 hours. He, of course, used disability to commit crimes.
These stories were G rated, and have nothing to do with the movie, except it as a character of course that can change his shapes.
Clayface is a R rated horror movie that with the exception of it taking place in Gotham city has nothing to do with the comic book. It is certainly not a comic book movie. It is a horror movie. I would give it a “good’ rating. This movie is definitely not for children, it is definitely a horror movie.
Tom Rhys Harries effectively plays Matt Hagan, and attractive young actor who sleeps with a beautiful woman. Unfortunately, for him he had unknown English slip with the girlfriend of a major mobster. The mobster, then has his henchman cut up Matt‘s face. It was gory.
He goes to a Doctor who treat him with chemicals that not only restore his face, but gives him the power of Shapeshifting. This power often acts on its own, but he slowly learns how to often control it. He is not only able to duplicate people’s faces and bodies, but their clothes too!
He then seeks out the people who have done him wrong and seeks revenge. His transformations are not only into human beings, but into other disgusting things.
The movie thankfully was made with a small budget. So the story is concentrated on a handful of people not a great deal more. The storyline is simple and compact. The movie itself looks like a movie from the 1990s, in terms of color and sharpness. The audio is fine, but it’s not a major factor in the movie. The special effects are a bit limited, but certainly will get your attention. And all of the actors played their parts very well.
I did find the very end a bit confusing, so watch it closely.
If you like this type of movie, this is a movie that you would like.
This movie was reviewed by a Krell with no help from Robbie the robot.
