Sony Exits the Blu-ray Player Market?

Sony has discontinued its final standalone UHD Blu-ray player, the UBP-X700/K, ending shipments of the device with no successor model announced. The move, first spotted by Japanese website Kunkoku.jp and confirmed through the status of the product on Sony’s own website, marks the company’s effective exit from the dedicated UHD Blu-ray player category. The player appears out of stock with no indication of future inventory, leaving the PlayStation 5 as the only remaining Sony hardware capable of reading UHD Blu-ray discs.

Currently, the US version of this player is listed as taking weeks for delivery.

The decision fits a longer pattern of reduced investment in physical media hardware. Standalone UHD Blu-ray players have seen steadily shrinking demand as streaming services expanded their libraries and improved image quality. By 2026, sales of dedicated players had contracted to a small niche, making continued production of new models difficult to justify for a company that has already narrowed its consumer electronics focus. Sony continues to sell a standard Blu-ray player in the Japanese market, the BDP-S1700/K, along with DVD players, but the higher-end UHD category has now been abandoned.

The UBP-X700/K itself was a relatively recent addition, arriving in May 2025 as a replacement for the earlier UBP-X800M2. That earlier model had already been removed from the catalog more than a year prior. The technical foundation of the X700 series traces back to 2018 designs, and the company appears to have concluded that further updates were not warranted given market conditions. Remaining stock may still be found at some European and U.S. retailers, yet restocking is not expected. Chinese manufacturers have begun offering competing players, while Panasonic remains the primary established brand still active in the segment.

The development also intersects with Sony’s plans for its gaming division. The company has stated that it will stop shipping disc-based versions of new PlayStation games beginning in January 2028, after which new titles will be digital-only. Existing physical releases will continue to be supported, yet the policy reduces the long-term incentive to maintain optical drives in future consoles. Industry observers therefore view the inclusion of a disc drive in the eventual PlayStation 6 as unlikely. The current PlayStation 5 and its optional disc-drive attachment for the digital and Pro models remain the practical options for Sony customers who still prefer physical UHD Blu-ray movies and games.

Sony’s broader retreat from optical media has unfolded over several years. In early 2026 the company ended shipments of its Blu-ray recorder models worldwide, stating that no successors would follow. Earlier steps included reductions in the optical media division and the wind-down of certain recordable disc formats. Parallel exits by other manufacturers, including LG’s departure from Blu-ray players in 2024, have left the hardware market concentrated among fewer suppliers. While physical discs continue to circulate for collectors and for titles that prioritize the highest bit rates or supplemental features unavailable on streaming platforms, the infrastructure supporting new playback hardware has continued to contract.

For consumers who maintain large libraries of UHD Blu-ray discs, the practical effect is a narrower set of new player choices. Panasonic’s remaining models, along with products from smaller or regional brands, now constitute the main alternatives. Existing Sony players already in homes will continue to function, and the PlayStation 5 provides an ongoing playback option for owners of that console. The longer-term trajectory, however, points toward further concentration of physical media around a limited number of specialized devices rather than mainstream consumer electronics products. The discontinuation reported by Kunkoku.jp therefore represents another incremental reduction in the hardware available for high-quality disc playback.
This is sad news, if true.  it does align with their games division decision.  I wonder if it will also mark the end of their movie disc production as well.

That's a big concern.  If they stop producing PlayStation discs, what happens to all that manufacturing capacity?  Is there enough demand to keep putting out Blu-rays?

Even if they don't do the actual production, the studios could turn over that business to another manufacturer.  

Weird to see this, since Sony put such a huge investment to win the format wars all those decades ago.

There are not many disc manufacturers left...most have shuttered their doors.
