The set is intended for adult collectors.

Animation's Most Iconic Characters

The collection features a lineup of legendary characters that helped define Avery's unmistakable style, including:

  • Droopy, the deceptively calm and slow-moving Basset Hound whose deadpan delivery and unlikely victories made him one of animation's most enduring stars.
  • The Wolf, the eye-popping, howling embodiment of Avery's exaggerated comedic sensibility, best known for his unforgettable appearances in classics such as Red Hot Riding Hood.
  • Red, the glamorous nightclub performer whose presence sparked chaos and comedic mayhem throughout Avery's most celebrated cartoons.
  • Screwy Squirrel, the unpredictable fourth-wall-breaking troublemaker created to parody traditional cartoon stars.
  • George and Junior, the lovable comedy duo whose mismatched personalities generated endless laughs.
  • Spike the Bulldog, the gruff and determined foil whose elaborate schemes often hilariously backfired.
For animation enthusiasts, collectors, and fans of classic comedy, Tex Avery: The Definitive Screwball Classics Collection delivers the ultimate celebration of one of the medium's most inventive and influential creators, preserving a body of work that forever changed the art of animation.

I have the first three! and the fourth volume will be coming out when the complete set is also issued. Warners has been doing a terrific job of restoring these great cartoons and putting them out on Blu-ray.

in case you don’t know, Warners, now owned by CBS/Paramount, got the rights to the MGM cartoons when they bought overTed Turner’s studios. so they own the rights to many MGM cartoons, including Tom and Jerry.

while it’s important to mention his MGM characters,  it is his run of Warner’s characters that are the most famous. He helped create Bugs Bunny, Elmer Fudd and Daffy Duck. This will sound a bit confusing, but often a character was introduced and then developed over several cartoons. So Elmer and Bugs were introduced as anonymous characters, but with Avery’s help, they developed into the characters that we know.

this is just a coincidence, but I was going to post about these disks and just a couple of weeks, when a couple of new ones come in, including this one.

One important thing that should be discussed. While famously there are 11 cartoons that have been withheld, a polite word for censored, Warner’s  has been restoring many of the cartoons to their original presentations. simply many of the cartoons were racist and sexist. Honestly, they should be released because it shows us what was acceptable in the 1930s and 40s and even the 50s that we would not accept today.

There is also a wonderful book out on Avery that discusses his cartoons and has wonderful illustrations.
