My ThoughtsI’ll be blunt and perfectly honest:
Supergirl didn’t work for me at all. She has a serious case of RBF for a lot of the film and even worse, she’s not particularly likeable. Maybe it was the way the character was written as a cold detached personality, which makes it hard to root for her, and the film struggles to balance her anger with any sort of emotional depth. I get it, Gunn wanted her to be angry, but the result was an audience who didn’t like her.
Furthermore, the story itself is weak and uninteresting. Despite its relatively short runtime of 108 minutes, the film feels much longer than that with tepid pacing. Certain scenes drag, emotional moments fall flat, and the structure of the film gets repetitive. It’s never a good sign when you have to check your watch multiple times throughout the film.
This was supposed to be Gunn’s fresh start for the DC Universe, but so far, he hasn’t taken the franchise to new heights. In fact, it may have sunk even lower. The film received mixed reviews and underperformed at the box-office, grossing only $126 million against a massive budget. With results like this, I doubt the new owners of Warner Brothers are going to give him much of a leash to improve things.
A former editor of mine, Shane Buettner, used to say that the Audio/Video quality was inversely proportional to the quality of the film. In this case, his theory is correct because the UHD presentation is fantastic. The video transfer includes both HDR10 and Dolby Vision and the image is sharp, clean, and very film like, with excellent details throughout. Colors are vibrant without being overdone, black levels are dep, and the cosmic environments looks great.
The Dolby Atmos track is equally strong with crisp and intelligible dialog, tight bass, and the mix utilizes every speaker in the room. The action scenes have great impact and the score fills the room nicely. So yes, it’s a reference track that outshines the actual movie. Buettner strikes again!

ConclusionI had modest hopes for this film but ultimately it turned out to be a major disappointment. The lead character isn’t likable, the story is weak sauce, and the film feels much longer than it actually is. Gunn’s rebooted DC Universe is off to a rough start and this entry doesn’t inspire much confidence. Its only saving grace is the excellent audio and video, but I can’t recommend this unless you’re a glutton for punishment.
