From the Celluloid Dreams press release:
True to our mission to bring underserved films to home video and American audiences, we have recently acquired the rights to one of the most overlooked and forgotten gialli — Cesare Canevari’s 1968 classic, Una Iena in Cassaforte, or A Hyena in the Safe, as it is known in English.
One safe. Six keys. Six robbers, each expecting their cut of a diamond heist when they finally meet to divide their spoils after months in hiding. But before they can open the safe that guards their glittering hoard, they are mysteriously killed, one by one.
With fear and suspicion growing among the shrinking group of survivors, it becomes clear that one of them is trying to take all the diamonds for themselves!
Directed and co-written by Cesare Canevari (MATALO!), A Hyena in the Safe is a remarkable caper/giallo crossover filled with dark humor and moments of psychedelic glory. The fallout from this heist will make your head spin with its inventive, over-the-top deaths and a free-spirited attitude that only the flamboyant '60s could produce.
A Hyena in the Safe has never been officially released in the US — not in theaters and not on home video. In fact, no English dub exists, and this Blu-ray release will feature the film in its original Italian language with English subtitles exclusively.
The only way to see this film previously was as a black-market bootleg or as an outdated import directly from Italy. Since many of you are on the lookout for these kinds of forgotten gems and are eager to experience films they have not owned before, it is with some pride that today, we want to let you know that A Hyena in the Safe will be available as a fully restored high-definition Blu-ray Disc on November 25!
The release will feature a studio-provided transfer that has been carefully restored and, for the first time ever, allows viewers to enjoy this classic heist/giallo mash-up in its full glory.
But just as you have come to expect from our releases, we did not stop there. Several bonus features will also be part of the release, including a commentary track by film critic Guido Henkel, and a 51-minute archival featurette, brimming with interviews with director Cesare Canevari, producer Ninì della Misericordia, actor Sandro Pizzochero, and others. Also included is the brand new video essay “Schrödinger's Diamonds: The Duplicitous Mystery of Hyena in the Safe” by Andy Marshall-Roberts, a brand new “On Location” featurette called "The mysteries of Villa Toeplitz" that will take you to Villa Toeplitz, the expansive mansion where the film was shot, along with the movie’s original Trailer and an Image Gallery.
