Snow White 2025
« on: June 11, 2025, 03:06:55 PM »
I thought I would take one for the team…

I didn’t see Snow White in the theatre, or on pay for view. I waited for Disney+ because I knew that someday my prints would come.

On the “Barry Pearl” scale, this was not a “bad” movie, nor was it a good one. It’s a “sit throughable” movie, but one you will only sit through once.

Preface

I have mentioned before that there is a lack of originality I n today’s movies. There are too many remakes and sequels and not enough new projects.  This, of course is a remake of Disney’s first animated movie.

I am tired of these Live Action remakes from Disney, such as Dumbo and Pinocchio, which have been terrible.  It is important for me to state that there is a BIG difference between animation, which is all fantasy and live action. Flowers and Trees dancing is fine in a cartoon, but can look silly and out of place in live action.

For example, at the beginning of the original animated “Lion King” after the birth of their son, the surrounded by all the animals in the jungle, the lions look out and see “the Circle of Life.”  In the live action remake, the lions look out and see “BUNCH!”

Same thing here. I wondered how, these days, they could  be political correct having seven short people, named “Dopey,” “Sleepy,” “Sneezy” and having a young lady sleep in their beds.

The Movie
Seriously, I knew I had to put all that aside and just watch the movie.

Sadly, with so many Disney movies, they are anti-democracy. Their “princesses” all are the daughters of Kings, dictators.  And so here is Snow White.  Of course, her mom and dad were a “good” king and queen and the “new" one, “Gal Godot” is evil.  You know most of the story. The Evil Queen tries to have Snow White murdered, she escapes into the woods, meets the dwarfs, and an apple a day does not keep the doctor away.

First, Rachel Zegler, who I first saw, and liked,  in “West Side Story” is fine, but not exceptional, in the role. She acts, or reacts, more with animated characters than with real people. The new music here is forgettable and almost needless.  But she has one of the two numbers that I liked, “Whistle While You Work.”  The other, “Hi Ho” is using by the dwarfs. Of course, both of these are from the original.

I am reluctant to write this part. Gal Gadot is a beautiful woman, who was wonderful in the first Wonder Woman movie.  But she has failed, here and in the others movies I have seen, to convince me that she is a good actress. She isn’t really acting but posing.  She was disappointing, again.

Snow White's  interaction with the dwarfs reminded me a bit of “Who Framed Roger Rabbit” but creepier. The dwarfs are a mix of animation and live action (I think) and while I got a bit used to them, they seemed not only weird, but unnecessary in how the movie is framed. That’s a surprise. You see, in modernizing this movie, there is no prince, but (human) freedom fighters. Snow White meets one at the beginning and then joins their pack when she flees the Queen. So the dwarfs get the short end of the stick here. The Queen does not meet her end as she originally does in 1938, falling off a cliff, but has a confrontation with the Freedom Fighters, now led by Snow White.

Of course, if Snow White wins there still will be no elections. She will become the new dictator.

If your kids want to see “Snow White” I’d show them the original. Like I said, this movie isn’t bad, just  unnessary.

Thanks for the review, Barry. I wasn't going to be very interested in this unless the reviews were incredibly good - or maybe wildly bad, lol. More of a "meh" seems like one I'll pass on.
