It's for local media only on the video side.As for ripping the discs, it's like eating an elephant--you don't do it in one sitting. I just started to go through my collection alphabetically (and purged some titles along the way that I'd never watch again) and just burned them while I was doing other stuff. The nice thing about MakeMKV is you can walk away from it once the rip starts to happen. I was also fortunate enough to have two disc drives, so it was almost twice as fast. I say almost because my old Pioneer BD drive can't rip UHD discs and it's much slower on Blu-rays compared to the ASUS drive I had bought for K-scapes Disc-to-Digital review I did. The ASUS is about 40% faster on Blu-ray discs and can do UHDs....funny though, it's much slower on DVDs versus the Pioneer I ended up ripping TV shows as well once all my movies were done. They take up a ton of space though with multiple seasons. DVDs rip fast and don't take a lot of space and while they don't look great on a front projector screen, they are watchable--especially for old shows like MASH, Seinfeld, and 3rd Rock from the Sun (which we are rewatching now).
Synology also makes 4 bay expansion drive units. Or you could just grab a newer 8 bay drive.
I have a 4 Bay one and I've thought about grabbing an 8-Bay, but outside of buying all new hard drives, how does one migrate the data over?
I cannot understand why media players don't have an onboard uhd drive so you can copy straight onto the HDD especially as you often have to log into media players software as i think's the case, isn't it OR have a facility where you can scan your uhd disk case barcode and take photo of disk and supply to a media player provider so you can download to the media player only, what you have on disk allready. ALL THIS plex or having to rip first on your computer and transfer is very inconvenient..id rather it be computers, computers stuff only, things that sit under your tv, tv stuff only. I was reading a review for the recent r-volution 8k, noticed it didn't have a uhd drive, did a browser search for 'media player with cd drive' and it pulled up the zidoo but I dont think you can on that either, can you? It seems to me in a world which should be so much better, technology is not being used to the full extent it could be. I used to have a Sony RDR-HXD870, it was my dream recording machine, alas it got stolen-sony the blighters discontinued them(all up to 1070), the world seems more interested in profit to me than showing and enabling and furthering the best they can.
