These aren't true 4K projectors, right? They use "pixel shift?"

Correct. They appear to have upped the lumens into big screen territory though.

Gotta admit that was my first thought, especially at the prices listed.

All of the DLP standard throw and UST projectors aren't native 4K, so there is a long way to go.

Those projectors also aren't starting at $7k and doubling/quadrupling in price to $30k up the line. But it's too bad on that tech too that we aren't seeing native 4K chips.

True. Epson seems to be dragging their feet on native 4K.

You obviously have not looked at the Barco and Christie models. Some of those cost much more than the top of the line Epson and they are shifting models.

Disagree there, Mike. The existence of higher level DLP projectors that are still hamstrung by TI not producing a native 4K chip just reinforces that the true problem is TI in that tech. I reviewed their DLP product list and only 1 chip exists with more than 1920 columns, the .66" DLP660TE at 2716 x 1528. I know that's good enough for most applications but the LCOS makers went native 4K years ago.

Where else are you going to find a 10,000 lumen home theater projector for a really big screen other than Sony's $80,000 model?

Ok, I forgot about the lumens, so I guess fair point. These are aimed at a little different market.

Last week I had asked a few questions. Here are the answers I got back.

QB1000
  • Since this is called Ultra Black, does this projector have higher native contrast than the LS12000?
Epson does not disclose native contrast or color space reproduction as they are affected by the environment and Epson’s testing environment will differ from a client’s installation. That being said, the QB1000 does have high contrast than the LS12000 due to both 22% higher brightness and more effective light suppression.

  • What percentage of DCI color space can this projector do?
Epson does not disclose native contrast or color space reproduction as they are affected by the environment and Epson’s testing environment will differ from a client’s installation.

  • Does this projector use a color filter to get wider color space?
No, it does not.

  • Is the laser replaceable by Epson? If so, cost?
No, the laser module is not replaceable.

  • Does the projector come with a mount?
A mount is not included, however the QB1000 is compatible with the mounting hardware supplied with the LS12000 (if replacing that unit). Epson also sells mounting hardware that is compatible with the QB1000.

QL3000/7000
  • What percentage of DCI color space can this projector do?
Epson does not disclose native contrast or color space reproduction as they are affected by the environment and Epson’s testing environment will differ from a client’s installation.

  • Does this projector use a color filter to get wider color space?
No, it does not.

  • Is the laser replaceable by Epson? If so, cost?
No, the laser module is not replaceable.

  • Does this projector use the same lenses as the commercial units?
The QL-Series are compatible with many of the commercial lenses, though not all of them.

  • Will a high contrast lens option be offered?
We cannot comment on future products, including lenses though Epson closely monitors feedback from customers and dealers when considering future products.

Epson 1000 and 3000 projectors

The Demo was actually very good. The CGI graphics looked solid and the details were right there with other projectors in and near their groups. Motion was as good as it gets these days. I am no stranger to Epson since I own a Home Cinema 3800 which we use for outdoor movie nights. I know there is plenty of talk about not being a True 4K but if I didn’t tell you before you saw the demo you would have no idea. Epson has really stepped up their game this round.
