 Max: Superpowered the DC Story

Max is now running three parts, about 1 hour each, documentary series on the history of DC comics.  I felt that this would be a three hour “puff” piece about DC, ignoring many components such as Marvel comics and he 1950s drive to cancel comics.  I was wrong.

The first two enjoyable hours give a good, if not totally complete, view of the creation of comics and the introduction of the super-heroes.  It includes a lot of what is often ignored, that is, who the full creators of characters were. For example, Bill Finger is the co-creator of Batman and H.G. Peter was a co-creator of Wonder Woman.

They actually discuss how Marvel changed the industry and XDC had to catch up.  And they discussed how many of the creators were not happy with comics.  Several celebrities are shown, with current and older interviews.  I did like the first two hours.

The Third hour, sigh, is the promotional piece.  It traces DC path, which is really Warner’s path,  from caring about comics, an industry that is now dying, to the movies and TV, where the money is. They ignore the fact that the movies were not greatly successful and it does become a puff piece for their new DC., which is not about comics but about TV and the movies.

I did like the history of the first two segments.

Thanks for the heads up and comments, Barry.

One question - if the title is "Superpowered the DC Story", which does NOT have "comics" explicitly in the title, i.e. the focus is on DC overall, would it then actually be appropriate to follow DC into the movies?

The first two hours focus on DC as a comic book company. The third hour is how it develops from comics to the screen. The last hour is less history and more promotion.
