My Grandfather was a D-Day, Battle of the Buldge vet so I am deeply interested in anything related to WWI. However, Battle of the Bulge: Winter War has gotten some really bad reviews.

There are plenty of outstanding foreign WWII films one should consider before stooping to this. I'll give you a list if you need some ideas.

The North Face isn't a war film per se, but it is based on a true story that happened just prior to WWII, and is well done.  

Both of these Finnish war movies are good, with Unknown Soldier being outstanding in my opinion -
