The Gentlemen (UHD Blu-ray) review

The Gentlemen (UHD Blu-ray) review
« on: April 22, 2020, 03:23:53 PM »

Studio: Universal
 Release Date: April 21, 2020
Rating:  R
Film:  3.5/5

 Plot
American expat Mickey Pearson (Matthew McConaughey) has built a highly profitable marijuana empire in London. When word gets out that he’s looking to cash out of the business forever, it triggers plots, schemes, bribery and blackmail in an attempt to steal his lucrative domain out from under him.

 My Thoughts
I can’t say I’m a huge fan of Guy Ritchie, but I have enjoyed a number of his films over the years. I’ve read that this film is similar to some of his earlier efforts—which I haven’t seen—such as Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Snatch, and Revolver. My wife gave up on the film quickly due to the subject matter, but I stuck with it and I’m glad I did. The first act is a bit slow, but once you get used to the narrative and tone, it’s a blast. In fact, it’s one of those movies that will probably get better with multiple viewings. The dialog is excellent, the acting is nothing special, but props to Hugh Grant for actually portraying a character who isn’t, well, Hugh Grant.

The A/V quality is excellent all around. Colors are vivid and rich, detail is quite good, especially in facial pores and fabrics, although longer shots can look a bit soft on occasions. The soundtrack makes good use of overhead effects with effective score bleed and the LFE has some moments that really stand out.

 Video 9/10

 Audio 9/10 (Dolby Atmos)

 Special Features:
  • Behind-the Scenes featurette
  • Best Gentlemanly Quips
  • Glosssary of Cannabis
  • Photo Gallery
  • Blu-ray+ Digital Copy

 Conclusion
This was an enjoyable experience for the most part, but it does have some scenes of graphic violence, but it does fit in with the narrative and isn’t there to shock the audience. I’ll definitely be watching this a second time because the nuance to the dialog is something that will get better the second time around. Recommended.

Thanks David. I've been on the fence with this one. Haven't been a big Guy Ritchie fan either ( other than Sherlock Holmes films ), but this does look like a fun cast.

I enjoyed it for what it was. It's definitely unique in the way it tells the story and the writing is fantastic.

Alright, you have me convinced. I'll wait for the 4K BR to go on sale.Which no doubt it will in the not too distant future.

Haven’t seen this yet as I was also on the fence given some of GR’s latest films. Having said that, the 3 you mention were very entertaining to me at least. Snatch needs a couple of views just for the dialogue (hint: subtitles may be required!).

Watched this last night. Loved this - and I haven't really been a Guy Ritchie fan in the past. This was a hoot. Picture and audio track on the 4K disc were top notch too. Loved the cast and the plot. Definitely will watch this again with friends !
