Need 4K HDMI extender for Krell 707 and JVC 3000
« on: January 18, 2020, 04:33:25 PM »
I am told by Krell that I need to get an HDMI (4K) extender to attach my HDMI to my JVC projector. Can you suggest a good one?

I have had the Krell 707 3D Preamp/Surround system for over a decade and had always gotten an excellent picture when connected to a JVC projector, with a 30 foot cable.

When I got my JVC 3000 projector I ran a direct, 4k cable to it from my Panasonic 9000 4K (input 2) and had no problem with that for a year.  The Krell was attached directly to input one with no problems. It had my “2K” inputs, TV and Roku.

This week I tried to attach my Krell 4K HDR switcher, which also required a system update.  After three hours on the phone with Krell, not getting a picture on the projector using the new switcher they suggested that I get a HDMI extender. We had attached the 4K Roku and the 2K Verizon Fios Cable box to the switcher and occasionally got a snowy image from the Roku and Panasonic but no image from the cable box.

So the Krell people said I should get a HDMI extender.  Do you know of a good one? Everyone here has been so helpful I really appreciate it!

The HD Fury Maestro works great and you can get a discount using the code "discount" at the moment (not sure how long for).

https://www.hdfury.com/product/maestro/

The TX module has 4 inputs, one HDMI out and one HDbaseT out that goes to an RX module has two ouputs. It handles full 4K60p (18Gb/s) content.

Lots of very useful features for JVCs, for example I developped with HD Fury JVC macros that allow to switch reliably and automatically to any calibration according to content (SDR rec-709, SDR BT2020, HDR10, HLG, 3D) using RS-232.

It's controllable using IR or IP control, with a web interface.

Highly recommended.

Manni,

From what I see here, I can attach all my 4Ks to this unit and bypass the Krell 4k unit.  I can have a video wire going to the projector and an audio out wire going into the Krell 707. Is that correct?

Yes, the maestro would replace your Krell switch as it handles up to four sources, and would provide an HDbaseT extension to the RX unit that would be close to your JVC.

You can use one of the HDMI outs to go to your AVR.

I suggest your post your setup in the HD Fury Maestro thread in the "other forum", the manufacturer is present and if your describe your setup and your needs he will reply quickly to confirm if your plan should work or not.

Always better to get the info from the horse's mouth.

However, given that you have a Krell switch already, someone might suggest a more economical extender.

I only love the Maestro because the JVC specific development into it.

I don't understand why a good quality cable won't work. I know that Monoprice has 4K cables with Redmere and other active technology built in.

One thing we really need to know is how long of a cable run is it to your projector from the Krell? Then we might be able to recommend just a cable that would work without an extender.

As I mentioned in my original post the cable length is 30 feet

Somehow I missed that in the OP. 30 feet isn't a particularly long cable run. There are plenty of options out there. A Fiber Optic HDMI cable would be my recommendation if you want the most reliable connection. The Celerity Fiber Optic HDMI cables are highly recommended. If you're looking to save some money, a Monoprice Redmere 30 footer should be fine as well. Just make sure it's rated for 18Gpbs data throughput.

Barry, before trying a new switcher (like the HDFury), I'd try a new cable. Here are two options:

The expensive one from Monoprice that promises 8K compatibility:  https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=38625

The value option for 4K HDR: https://www.monoprice.com/product?p_id=15427

I've tested the value option at a shorter length and it worked. Frankly, I'm not sure what that switcher from Krell is really doing. How much did it cost?

I could be wrong, but it looks like it simply switches 4K signals externally of the 707. It might have some sort of automation on the switching end via RS 232.

Really, what else could it do?

Ouch...that's pretty steep for what it does. Barry, does it do what Tracy says and integrates with the pre/pro?

Please correct me if I'm wrong but It was my understanding that most extenders and active cables use lossy compression for 18 Gpbs signals.
