JVC 3000: A request to our owners

I need a favor for anyone with a JVC 3000 or even a 2000.

When I got my 3000 a few months ago I got too dark picture which the JVC specialist, who came to my house, blamed on my Oppo. He said to get a Panasonic 9000. I did.  I am still not happy with the picture.

But when we saw the “lines” reading on the JVC menu, when playing a 4k disc, it said I was getting an image of about 3800 lines. The JVC rep said that that was 4k.  I just read that 3800 is the amount for an “ULTRA” disc, not a 4k.  4K should have a reading of just over 4000.

Can someone put on a 4k disc on their JVC and let me know the line reading?  I would greatly appreciate that.

Without being there, I can't fix your dim issue problem, but I can address the other problem. UltraHD Blu-ray discs are encoded at 3840 x 2160, so the lines of resolution you're seeing in the menu is correct. People conflate 4K with UltraHD. They're completely different resolutions. 4K is meant for professional or commercial video, not consumer video like UltraHD Blu-ray is. There are no Blu-ray discs encoded at 4K resolution.

What size and screen material are you using? Maybe we can figure out why your image is dim.

Thanks so much your answer was incredibly helpful. I have a 110 inch green, a Studio tech 100 by Stuwart. Before I bought the screen I called up the company and that is what they suggested. It is going to take me until Thursday to put back micro unit which was just upgraded to 4K.

I'm assuming you have the projector set to use high lamp mode? Depending on how close or far away the projector is from the screen can effect image brightness. Generally speaking, the closer the projector is to the screen, thus using more zoom on the lens, the more light you will get from the projector. 

What Picture Modes are you using? For SDR, you'll probably want to use Natural Mode. If you're using the new frame adaptive HDR tonemapping mode for HDR, make sure you take the tonemapper out of Auto mode and select High mode. This will give the image the most apparent image brightness.

And if all else fails, it wouldn't be a bad idea to have a professional calibrator come out and make sure it's set up properly. For such a large investment on your part, it wouldn't be a bad idea.

That screen is not overly large. I can't imagine it being dim until you are well north of 1000 hours on your lamp.

That's what I was thinking too, Craig. Unless there is something going on with his specific projector, it has to be settings/setup related.
