Finally watched Interstellar on 4K Blu-ray. Wow, that looked outstanding. Much cleaner looking picture than the Blu-ray too.

The problem with dimming is with the subs: since they are 100% bright (at least with SDR material), dimming either does not turn on, or there is a lot of pumping.

That's what I see on a RS400, I can't imagine how it would be different with laser dimming?

Technically speaking, there are physical DI's that are just as precise and have tons of gradual steps from open to close just like a laser dimming solution. That is, they can move from fully closed to fully open, or to any one of hundreds of positions in between, within the time a single frame and then move again just as fast if need be on the next frame. Good dynamic contrast systems need the ability to be this fast, but more importantly, they need to know when not to change position (if only a tiny APL change happens) or when they need to move smoothly or even change dramatically. It's easy to create and program a fast moving dynamic contrast system, but it's difficult to create algorithms that are smart enough to work subtly or not at all when needed. It's more of an art than it is a science. I hope to see JVC continue to make native contrast improvements because the better the native contrast is, the less it needs help with a dynamic contrast implementation and therefore the less it's going to kick in and be seen.

I find that placing the subtitles within the video frame dramatically helps with this. Though not all players allow you change the position of the subtitles so ymmv.

It wouldn't be (I see the same on my RS600), but frankly I couldn't care less about "pumping" on subs, they're not part of the scene/frame IMO, they're a viewer aid.  It's the same with credits, I couldn't care less, if the only place I see pumping is on text overlays, then IMO a dynamic illumination system is working fine, and I'm completely happy with it.

I watch a lot of subtitled movies. Watched one last night in fact - " Endless Poetry ". I don't recall ever seeing subtitles affected by the dimming on my RS4500. If it happens it's rare. Credits - yes, but that is the same on every projector with dynamic dimming that I've owned.

I didn't say the pumping would be gone, just that it lessens how bad it is visually.

Its always "Nerve Racking" lifting up and down heavy expensive components......A good friend ( pictured) reckons he is  getting to old for such things, but helped with some much needed muscle to change the units over.

Even with Air Con , the sweat levels were high ......at least on me anyway , somehow just as you do the "lift" that horrid thought of an expensive PJ "slipping" from ones hand grip raises the stress level considerably!!   

Time for a rest...

RS-400.

When you are in a dark scene, with the iris closed, when somebody speaks and the subs appears, the iris opens. It has too, the subs are 100% white (at least with SDR material).

I don't see how laser dimming would avoid that. You need to have max light to display these subs, or else they will look grey.

I use a CM340 lift...  so easy...

Hope you have other uses for that lift. Looks like it is a $2,800 lift. While that is cheap for a lift, it is still a fairly expensive item, just for lifting projectors into place.
