JVC RS4500 (native 4K laser projector)

Craig where would like to see improvements. What are the projectors weak points?

To all RS4500 owners, looking through 80 something pages there are few to no screen caps. Everyone likes to see pictures, come on guys post some good screen caps. Convince me and others to purchase one:)

I got raked over the coals for posting screen shots on " the other unfriendly forum ". But I can post some.

Improvements - what everyone always crys for - more native contrast. That said, last night we watched some of the Winter Olympics. The free style ski jumpers that ski straight up and do acrobatics - the shots of them against a black sky were spectacular - the black sky was nearly indistinguishable from the black screen edge. There was nother to complain about.

Fan noise, black levels are elevated compared to standard JVCs and dynamic iris is broken.  Other than that an absolutely STELLAR projector.

I'm using a Lumagen Pro but have never used custom curves to make comparisons.

It's tough to make comparisons. By the way, I am using Mode 1 dimming and find it works flawless ( Mode 2 was too over  aggressive a few times ), but my screens are smaller than yours, and I'm only running in low and medium laser. That's got to be contributing to the differences we see with the dimming.

People are upset the RS4500 isn't beating out JVC's own e-shift projectors in terms of on/off contrast. While understandable I think people need to realize this is a first generation product. It took JVC decades to reach the point where we're at now their bulb based units. If JVC can put out a similar amount of lumens as the RS4500 with the amount of on/off contrast the RS520 has in a new lamp based native 4K projector at or under $10000 this or next year, I'll be happy and content with that projector for several years.  I think this is the projector many are waiting for from JVC. I think Sony is forcing JVC's hand in this now that they have two SXRD 4K units selling for well under $10000.

Doubtful. Anyways, it's got to be laser or I'm not interested. Overall the picture - even with lower contrast - is far superior in many areas compared to my RS600. Getting rid of the lamp has got to be a large part of that ( no lamp flicker for one ).

You really really really need to see the Z1/RS4500 first hand, and then honestly you wont place so much emphasis on the above comment

Agreed.  The amount of time that you actually view material where you can even notice the decrease in native on/off versus the lamp based projectors is minuscule compared to all the other time spent where the image it throws is undoubtedly superior in every facet than the lamp based models.

I don't know, when I upgraded my RS4910 to my RS600, the improvement in contrast was one of the primary things I noticed, and the RS4910 had "better" contrast than the RS4500 apparently.  So call me skeptical.

I definitely won't be taking a drop in contrast on faith, or buying sight unseen.

The improvements over the original firmare have made the gap close compared to my RS600. Between full fade to black and mode 1 laser dimming, I'm all but satisfied other than rare moments. Fact is, there are those rare very dark scenes that didn't look that great even on my RS600. You would need an OLED for those ( I'd guess - never owned an OLED ). And really, the Arve Tool custom curves really was what took it over the top. Movies like Guardians of the Galaxy 4K just look spectacular !

I have had MANY people in my theatre and they have seen an X9500 and my X9900 directly against my Z1/RS4500 NOT one person has ever noticed any deficiency  of contrast with the Z1/RS4500.

In fact on more than one instance the Z1/RS4500 appears to exceed the contrast level of the E-Shift units due to its superb laser Dynamic Dimming.

Does the Sony VW5000ES do both dynamic iris and laser dimming?  It seems like they could be used in conjunction if the iris motion can be made smooth enough.

No laser projectors offer laser dimming and a dynamic iris together as that implementation would just be a nightmare. It would have to be one or the other.

Many cameras have an iris combined with gain adjustments (ISO).  The same could be used with a projector.  Obviously it is more complex than one or the other and perhaps not worth it.

I'm sure they love laser dimming as it is super precise and smooth without dealing with a motor that is in constant movement.
