JVC RS4500 (native 4K laser projector)

I watched a bit on my OLED after my post.  My OLED was never calibrated so keep that in mind (it's in my kitchen and it's used only for news or sports events).  Yes, it has great contrast and perhaps it's my settings but I found the contrast too much.  If I got close to make it immersive the dark scenes were too noisy (again, could be lack of calibration) and the highlights were fatiguing and unnatural.  I'll take my large screen and the RS4500 any day of the week.

To each his own I guess, but as great as the picture on the RS4500 is it doesn't compare to an OLED when it comes to contrast, so you probably enjoy the immersive aspect of the large screen more than anything which I love about my HT as well, but there are some things that projectors can't reproduce that flat panel displays can and that is irrefutable if we are being honest with one another. 

Out of curiosity I'd like to hear others opinions of the scenes I am referring to from Godless that have viewed it on their RS4500.  Maybe I am overly sensitive to the really low APL scenes?

Maybe you need to add a Radiance Pro with their new HDR tone mapping feature. Kris Deering says itmakes his RS4500 look pretty close to his OLED.

Craig, you have the Panny, so you have Netflix HDR.   You're missing out if you don't take advantage of it.  Try it for a month.  Quality is pretty damn good.

The thing is I have only enough time to watch a movie 3 - 4 nights a week max. - and I have at any one time at least 3 movies I've never seen yet. I have 69 4K Blu-rays and 481 Blu-rays, and new ones like Dunkirk and Kingsman 2 filtering in all the time. I have zero time to watch almost any television series - network or Netflix. I'm almost 100% a movie guy. And I never go to a commercial theater - not even for Star Wars. Always watch them in my theater. A Netflix subscription would be pretty much wasted on me.

I was contemplating that but I have talked to some people I hold in high regard and they told me that you can calibrate the RS4500 so well that buying a Radiance Pro for tone mapping only would be spending money "unwisely".

 Look I have never been disappointed by my RS4500 and watching Godless didn't disappoint me either b/c I know that some scenes will not look "fantastic" on any projector and this series just happens to have much much more more of it than anything I have ever seen to date.  I urge you if you have Netflix just go watch some of it and you will see what I mean.  I have encountered other scenes in other films where there will be some scenes where the lack of contrast compared to flat panels is evident, but those scenes come and go quickly.  This series has got to have some of the lowest APL I have ever scene in my life. 

Again my original statement of "unwatchable" was a poor choice of words, but when you have the RS4500 you think that there is nothing that it can't display really really well so when I watched this series on my projector at first I was caught off guard b/c the super low APL scenes just never end at times.  Everything else about the series will be rendered superbly without question.

I can appreciate that completely!  What I am seeing may also have to do with compression algorithms that drown out a lot of detail in low light because I have never encountered anything close to what I saw in Godless with a UHD or std bluray to date.

Kris' comments are precisely why I inquired about it as well.  I am sure there is some benefit from it, but maybe to what extent is it worth it to the individual to spend the money on a radiance pro?  Now if you use it to scale and some of it's other benefits that it offers there is certainly more value to it than just tone mapping which is all I was inquiring about.

I have a Pro and a 640 currently, trying to secure a 4500, but I feel like the Pro makes a huge difference in the 640. Granted I have had a Pro for a long time and originally purchased one because I love the autocal feature bu the HDR Intensity Mapping is excellent.

Ghost is dark, but certainly watchable. I have an RS640 here right now, with the manual iris set to -8 and auto 2 on, I watched part of Pacific Rim ( 4K BR ) and Ghost I T Shell ( 4K BR ) last night. For many reasons, both of those movies look much better on my RS4500 despite the much higher native contrast on the 640.

An update on what I posted over in the "other forum" a few weeks ago in regards to the image jarring artifact I was seeing.  We had thought it was the Tributaries Fiber Optic cable that was the culprit however after swapping out w/ a Ruipro the artifact returned.  I captured videos and stills of the occurrence and since the projector is so new JVC is going to replace it rather than take it in for service.  I am thinking that the HDMI board could be malfunctioning b/c if I unplug the cord and then plug it back in it seems to go away for a period of time but after awhile it starts happening again.   From the beginning I didn't think it was an HDMI cord issue b/c I have had many before and it's nothing like what usually happens with HDMI issues (blue, green or black screens, image going in and out).  Anyway thought I'd let everyone know over here rather than the other place so that we don't give the "haters" any morsels to jump on and declare the RS4500 a POS.
