Epson 5040 and 6040 projectors
« on: October 22, 2016, 09:27:36 AM »
Epson has announced a few new models and I find the 5040UB and 6040UB as great options at their price points. The 5040 is the consumer side and the 6040 is sold on the pro side. The specs between the two are nearly identical so i will talk about the 5040. This projector has greatly increased calibrated light output over the previous 5030. Other improvements are DCI P3 color space and the ability to play 4k UHD BD's and display HDR. Pricing on this projector is $2,999.

Very seriously considering replacing my 6010 with the 6040.  I've seen the 6040 locally, and I'm really impressed with the image created by the pixel shifting.  My local dealer doesn't have a working UHD setup yet, so I haven't seen any 4K HDR content yet.  I've been reading up on the different 4K HDR formats (HDR 10 & Dolby Vision), so I think I understand the advantages of each and realize that the 6040 can play only HDR10.  What are the chances that Epson could release an affordable Dolby Vision compatible projector anytime in the near future?  Will anybody?

Chance of Dolby Vision in the near future for any projector is not very good. Theaters can do this because they can be designed to an exact standard. HT projectors on the other hand have too much variation, due to screen size, screen gain, throw distance, projector used and settings used.

Had been looking at the RS400 (maybe 500) and this 6040/5040.  The latter, mainly, only because of a little gaming, and superb performance from the Epson in that regard. I have been convinced of the "King of Contrast" for ultimate movie quality viewing, but the Epson seems to do it all "great" if not the best.....Price is a factor as well.  By the time I get the build done, speakers updated, Oppo 203 purchased (IF I don't win it!!!!), odds and ends electronics, receiver upgraded (for Atmos), purchase a screen, etc....$ makes a difference.

The ProjectorReviews review talked about a wireless HD version of the 5040, but I didn't see any mention of the 6040.  Is there a version of the 6040 with wireless HD capability?  I see from discussions on other forums that the wireless chip in the 5040 has higher bandwidth.

There is no 6040UBe. Not sure why. I even double checked at Epson's website.

I visited my local dealer today to check out their 6040, but they were having connection problems.  Turned out to be a bad HDMI cable, but at one point the projector displayed a message indicating it thought it had a wireless HD signal.  This indicates to me that the 6040 has the internal circuitry and firmware for wireless HD.  Just need the wireless adapter.

It might, but you probably can't buy the required transmitter for it.
