Voice control is becoming a very popular topic in the trade press lately. I've tried it and have found that it still needs some work, though.
For home theater use I can imagine: "I said, TURN DOWN THE VOLUME!"

I would like just for light control in the HT room, using simple commands.
Lights on when entering.
Lights off when movie starts.
Lights on at movie end.
I have been considering trying this.

What are you planning on using? We use Insteon for all of our lighting and outlets, and have a scene switch when we walk in the HT, and I control everything via apps on my tablet. One of these days I will get CQC up and running again to control it all. I know one of the easiest ways to do voice control is Alexa...all you need is lighting that can be controlled via a hub that is compatible with Alexa (Insteon is one).

Considering Amazon Echo (Alexa), but may wait to see what Google Home brings to the table. Amazon Echo will work with Harmony and I think the insteon switches and dimmers will work with Harmony's Home Hub Extender. I can control my Z-wave lighting that way right now, using iPhone, tablet or Ultimate remote.

I bought my wife the Echo when it came out and she said she would never use it...she uses it everyday for music, grocery lists, etc.. It was the best gift i have ever gotten her. We also use it for our lighting in the Living Room (where Alexa is). I have a ISY994i hub that I use, and I have an extra one I will be getting rid of soon.

I always thought voice control would be cool but my experience with it has kinda soured me on it. I've used lots of various devices, the most prominent being the Xbox One, and they all seem to have trouble understanding me. My voice is pretty plain too so I'm not sure why.

The Amazon Echo seems to do pretty good on voice control...apparently they have come a long ways in accuracy.

I may try one out. They seem to have some good deals now with Black Friday coming up.

Amazon had a great Black Friday deal on the Amazon Dot... I almost bought one, but I saw that it only works via your speakers or AVR. I want one that I have a choice between using my AVR for audio, and the internal speakers. The reason being is that sometimes my wife just wants to ask it a question, and there is no need to have the AVR turn on for it to respond, plus the additional time it takes for audio to come out of the AVR.

As I recall...all you will have to do is setup an email account, and input your wifi password to use. If you want to use Amazon, or other services you will need to setup the account info for each account for them. It is real easy. I think your inlaws will love it.

The Amazon Echo is very good (not perfect) in understanding you. I bought one a while back, and I recently got the Dot.

I have the Dot setup in the living room, trying out some lights from Philips Hue Starter Pack. I'm trying it because it's what I intend to move up to the theater room when it's that time! I'm enjoying it. There's so much you can do.

... I almost bought one, but I saw that it only works via your speakers or AVR.
It has a small speaker built in to speak back to you. You can run it to your AVR via cable, or when I want (in my living room, for now), I can say, "Alexa, connect to my speaker", and she'll pair with my LG soundbar via bluetooth!

I wish you the best of luck with the Hue setup... If I had it to do again I would not have purchased it. The first one we purchased worked for a few days before one light would not be recognized anymore. We returned it and got another one and with ina few months the same thing happened. We now have 3 lights that we can change the color on, and the 4th one is always white since it stopped working again. I am not alone in this happening as I have seen this in other forums too. They didn't have this product fully developed IMO when they released it.
