Anyone have a favorite turntable that you just loved to listen to... My favorite turntable was a Mitchell GyroDec with a Sumiko modified SME V arm, and a Sumiko Blu Point Special Cartridge. I remember scrounging the used record stores looking for records to listen to again on my setup, then taking them home, and going through the ritual of cleaning the records. It was really fun to cue up the Denon CD player, and turntable and A/B the record and CD for friends, and then ask them which sounded better. I never had anyone pick the CD over the record! When I told them they just selected the record they didn't believe me until I lifted the stylus off the record! I really miss those days, but I think I have become to used to using remote controls now (lazy) to ever go back to records again.

Im still using my Luxman PD555 Special Limited Production.. 1 of 55, with a SME 312S arm and a VDH Black Beauty SPX, and on the other base a SME Series III arm with a VDH MC10 special stripped.
I also have 2 Technics SL1000 MK2/ SP10 MK2, a Technics SL 110, Thorens TD125,and a Forcell Air Reference, mostly with SME arms.
I think i might still play more vinyl than CD.. It depends a bit what music i want to listen to, as most vinyl pressings is really really badly produced, and pretty much everything out on vinyl after 1985 sure to be destroyed by the digital mastering age, and loss of the art producing vinyl.

I remember seeing all of the Turntables listed except the Forcell Air Reference (I might have seen a review though). The Technics were great tables, and I have always loved Luxman equipment! I envy you!

I bought most of my turntables and arms 7-9 years ago when it was pretty common to find these pieces for a decent price.. Payed around 1300$ for the PD555 back then with a SME series III arm.. It seems the old scool stuff like that is impossible to buy for normal money these days.
Remember buying a SP10 with a SME V arm and a VDH Grashopper for 1400$.

Is that one of the ones that was made of concrete? I remember seeing those at the Audio Club when I was in the USAF. Great looking table, and as I recall great sounding!

I agree...the price on some of the older pieces of equipment has skyrocketed. I have seen some pieces going for several times more than they did brand new.

The turntable was made of a limestone-resin composite to reduce vibrations. It weighed 35 pounds!

I am thinking of picking up a Technics SL1000 MK2 from a friend for a price I can't pass up. (free) He has 4 of them and I have always wanted one. I am undecided on finding an older turntable to match my vintage 1960's tube amp though, or just using the Technics. It would be nice to find some vintage speakers too...
This is not for my primary stereo. Just something to piece together for fun.

Ive only had one and I loved it...was the cheap project carbon x....but with kids int he house too much jumping and skipping to listen...maybe in 18 years when they move out :)

Free is the best price! A nice Thorens would be a great match up too, but I would go with the free one first, and if later you find a Nostalgia piece get it too.

Go for it. It is one of the best TT ever made.. Just be aware there is 2 different platters.. Or damping of the platter.. If you remove the rubber mat, and knock the platter on the outer edge with a nail.. you will hear if it starts ringing. or not.. The later is prefered.

I ended up not getting the SL1000. Instead I saw a Technics SP-25 with a 15" wood Grado arm that caught my eye. My friend played it for me, it sounded great and I liked the look. So I picked it up. Soon as I get it cleaned up I'll take some pics.

Got my new to me TT cleaned up. I forgot how great vinyl sounds!! All I can say is WOW!!

Ron, You should take a drive over sometime and give it a listen. I am working on getting some copies on vinyl of CD's I have to compare. Plus you have never heard my "budget" hifi 8)

This is my fully optioned VPI Classic 2..
Set up with "2" 3D Tone Arms.....one with a Lyra "Delos" and one with a Lyra "Kleos"..

We now have a new Turntable in our setup... A Pro-Ject RPM 1.3 Carbon. It is not in the same league as my old Grodecs were, but it is a nice Turntable for only $500.

I have recently been edging back into vinyl a bit. After selling my old Denon direct drive TT to a friend a couple of years ago, I knew that I wanted to eventually get a really nice analog front end. After a couple of missed deal opportunities at my local hi end shop I ended up with a VPI Classic (2014 consolidated version). My goal is to be able to make some high quality rips (or "needle drops" I guess they're called). So I also wanted a very good quality cartridge and phono section to go with that. After a good bit of research I decided on a Graham Slee Accession phono stage, which has great reviews and a few features that are potentially nice for this. For the cartridge I recently picked up the new SoundSmith Aida Mk II. (The table came with an Ortofon 2M Bronze and I haven't set up the Aida 2 yet.)
Just need to add the ADC piece - looking like that'll probably be a Tascam DA-3000.

My current table is a Technics SL-23 that I rebuilt a bit.
I had an older Technics Direct Drive that I bought in the early '80s but always wanted to try a belt drive table.
It really sounds pretty decent but with all things, I have the urge to see if something else will sound better. I am looking at several options. I know that VPI has their entry-level Cliffwood for around $900 but I have seen used Scouts (not sure of the exact model) for around $1000.
To further complicate matters, I have also seen the Pioneer PLX-1000 for $669 and Schiit Audio's SOL is supposed to retail for $699-ish.

I added a new table a few weeks ago. It's a Pro-ject RPM3 Carbon.
It's pretty unusual in that it has nearly no plinth. I wanted to try a turntable with a detached motor and a carbon fiber arm. I'm liking it so far, it's really quiet.

That’s a better question than you might think! Right now my Krell phono pramp is in the shop. When I first got this, about 33 years ago, I used it almost every day.
20 years ago I began using it once or twice a week. But slowly DVDs and Blu-rays took over my time. Of course CDs and Sacds became my first choice of music. Now, are use it a little bit once every few months. I also never turn on my FM tuner which I keep debating with myself whether I should sell. This is because there are no longer any FM stations That I like in my neighbourhood and I have been using Internet radio and Pandora to get the music that I like. But my world has really changed in the last 10 years. Video, in discs, on cable and streaming Have taken over my household.

From what I have read, all the VPI tables are top-notch players. Maybe I can afford one when I grow up. :)
As for your tuner, you are like me, holding onto equipment we'll rarely use again. I still have my Toshiba XA2 HD DVD player sitting in my rack. Although, your tuner is actually worth something.

I really like this turntable. Like I said I bought a 33 years ago. It was more common than for the high end manufacturers to update their older units. I originally bought a mark 2 but I have the mark 4. This is one Component that seems to have gone up in price. One day I’ll tell you the funny story about why I did not buy a Lynn turntable

I had a nice turntable a few years back...but with little kids jumping around I couldnt listen long without skips...well they are gettgin older so I will be able to re purchase...cant wait
