Criterion Collection: The Complete Stanley Kubrick.
Many movies become great over the years when we begin to appreciate what they are. Stanley Kubrick‘s movies, for me, usually start out great, and just get greater with age.
Before I really appreciate them I have to see his movies a second time. There’s always so much in it and so much that surprises me that I need to take a second look before I fully appreciate them. For example, Barry Lyndon was one of the most beautiful movies I had ever seen, but it was paced so slowly I did not appreciate it the first time. But then understanding the pacing. I really enjoyed it the second time and every time since.
In Full Metal Jacket I didn’t realize that the second segment, about the Vietnam war, was meant to be a fantasy. But the second time I saw it, I realized that.
And Stanley Kubrick movies tend to be told in chapters. Where each segment is complete, but doesn’t necessarily flow quickly into the next.
The Criterion Collection has just put out a big box set of the Stanley Kubrick movies and his shorts, all 16 of them in 4K. The set comes with two books, well kind of two books. The first is a large paperback discussing Stanley Kubrick, the second is a book that holds the disks and has many comments about them. It also has a documentary on Stanley Kubrick.
The set came out at $600, way beyond what I would pay. It was a bit less on Amazon but then last Tuesday criterion offered it at half price, $300. That comes out to something just less than $20 a desk. So I took the plunge even though I have several of these disks already in 4K .(let me know if you need any, I’ll sell them VERY CHEAP.!🤑
I took some photographs that I thought you’d like to see. I just got the disc so I can’t yet comment on the movies, but I will in time.
