Title: A Question about Kubrick’s The Shining
Post by: Barry on October 22, 2026, 10:05:18 PM
I have never seen the movie The Shining. I will be getting criterion’s new collection of Kubrick movies And they have two versions of this movie in the set.

When is the international version and the second is a 25 minute longer one that was released in the theaters.

Does anyone have a preference to which one is better should I decide to watch it?  And if you know, how is it different?  But only tell me if it doesn’t spoil anything.

Barry,

The longer version is more of a "slow burn" type of movie that gives you more of a backstory on the hotel and the main characters. The International version gives the audience a little more credit to "connect the dots" of what's happening, without having to actually see the backstory. If it matters, Kubrick always preferred the International cut (or so I've read). When I "backed up my disc" ;), I chose the theatrical version since it's the one I grew up watching. So it would be my personal preference, but I honestly don't think I've ever watched the shorter cut (maybe I have, but can't remember).
