On November 24, the fighting spills onto the asphalt when Shawscope Presents: Street Gangs of Hong Kong arrives on Blu-ray in North America. In the wake of Bruce Lee’s contemporary-set kung fu films, Shaw Brothers took martial arts action beyond the safety of its Movietown soundstages and into the dangerous streets of Hong Kong. The four-disc box set brings together seven socially charged crime and martial arts films, all presented in brand-new 2K restorations by Arrow Films from the original 35mm negatives.
Jointly directed by Chang Cheh and Kuei Chih-Hung, The Delinquent stars Wang Chung (Shaolin Temple) as a hot-headed young martial artist who finds himself targeted for recruitment by a ruthless triad gang. The Teahouse, Big Brother Cheng, and Big Bad Sis star Chen Kuan-Tai (Executioners from Shaolin) as a neighborhood leader looking out for his community against hoodlums. In The Big Holdup, Chen Kuan-Tai and future The Killer star Danny Lee are among a group of robbers whose successful heist is threatened by the possibility of a traitor in their midst. Set during the Republican era, The Convict Killer stars Ti Lung (A Better Tomorrow) as a man newly released from prison and hellbent on finding the person who framed him for opium trafficking, armed with an iron chain and a thirst for revenge. Finally, The Brothers follows an upright police inspector and a powerful triad leader who find their opposing paths complicated by the fact that they are brothers by blood. The landmark crime drama would become one of the key inspirations for John Woo’s A Better Tomorrow.
Special features include High Definition (1080p) Blu-ray presentations of all seven films, original lossless Mandarin, Cantonese and English mono audio options across select films, optional English subtitles for the Cantonese and Mandarin soundtracks and English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing for the English soundtracks, brand-new audio commentaries on all seven films, original theatrical trailers for five of the films, a U.S. TV spot for The Delinquent, brand-new interviews with actors Susan Shaw, Chen Kuan-Tai, Chen Kuan-Tai, and Bruce Le, film critic and Asian cinema expert Tony Rayns discussing the films of Kuei Chih-Hung and Chor Yuen, a brand-new interview with Frank Djeng about The Brothers’ legacy, and a collectors’ perfect-bound booklet.
