Plot
In a seaside California town, best friends Mac (Mel Gibson) and Nick (Kurt Russell) are on opposite sides of the law. Mac is a former drug dealer trying to clean up his act, while Nick is a high-profile detective trying to take down a Mexican drug lord named Carlos (Raul Julia). Soon Nick's loyalties are put to the test when he begins an affair with restaurateur Jo Ann (Michelle Pfeiffer) -- a love interest of Mac's -- unwittingly leading his friend into a police-orchestrated trap.
My Thoughts
Written and directed by Robert Towne (Chinatown), Tequila Sunrise blends neo-noir crime drama with Casablanca-style love triangle. I’ve always thought the film was a bit predictable, but it’s still a lot of fun mainly due to the chemistry of the three leads. Gibson, Pfeiffer, and Russell play off each other beautifully, and their interplay gives the movie a lot more charm than the crime-thriller plot would otherwise suggest.
Towne’s direction occasionally lets the story get away from him, especially in the last act, where informants, shifting identities and various twists and turns start to pile up faster than the narrative can fully support. But even when the plot gets messy, the performances and Conrad Hall’s fabulous cinematography keep the film engaging until the credits roll.
Arrow’s 4K release is outstanding. The film has been restored from the original 35mm camera negative, scanned at 4K/16‑bit at Warner Bros./Motion Picture Imaging, with a full 4K restoration and color grade completed at Duplitech. An original 35mm answer print was used as the primary grading reference, ensuring the final image reflects the film’s theatrical look. All materials were sourced directly from Warner Bros., with QC handled by Pixelogic.
The UHD presentation includes both HDR10 and Dolby Vision, and the results are excellent. Detail is crisp and film‑like, grain is natural, and contrast is superb. Hall’s cinematography — warm coastal tones, nighttime interiors, and sun‑drenched exteriors — looks better than ever. This is easily the best the film has ever looked on home video.
Arrow includes both the original 4.0 and 2.0 stereo mixes, restored by Þorsteinn Gislason. I sampled both tracks and preferred the more spacious 4.0 mix, which offers better separation and a fuller soundstage. Dialogue is clean and intelligible, dynamics are strong, and Dave Grusin’s low‑key score comes through beautifully. Both mixes are faithful to the film’s original audio design.

Conclusion
While nowhere near a perfect film, it’s quite enjoyable and is carried by strong performances, great chemistry, and the stylish cinematography. Arrow’s 4K release is outstanding, with top-notch video quality and an excellent audio restoration that easily surpasses previous home video releases. If you’re a fan of the cast or classic 80’s cinema, then be sure to add this to your collection.
