Title: Forbidden Planet Makes Its Global 4K UHD Debut on 9/29/2026

On September 29, the iconic science-fiction classic Forbidden Planet makes its global 4K UHD debut, presented for the first time in its original 2.55:1 CinemaScope aspect ratio. Director Fred M. Wilcox (Lassie Come Home) transports William Shakespeare’s The Tempest beyond the solar system. The Limited Edition release features a brand-new 4K restoration from the original 35mm negative by Arrow Films, hours of special features and newly commissioned extras. A Limited Edition Blu-ray release will also be available.

Commander John J. Adams (Leslie Nielsen, The Naked Gun: From the Files of Police Squad!) arrives on a distant planet to investigate what happened to an exploration vessel. He soon discovers that Dr. Edward Morbius (Walter Pidgeon, Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea), his daughter Altaira (Anne Francis, Honey West) and Robby the Robot (The Invisible Boy) were the only survivors. The new arrivals find themselves in mortal danger from an unseen force that terrorizes the planet. Forbidden Planet became a landmark of science fiction through its cutting-edge special effects and groundbreaking electronic score. The intergalactic crew also includes Richard Anderson (The Six Million Dollar Man), Earl Holliman (Police Woman), James Drury (The Virginian) and James Best (The Dukes of Hazzard).

Special features include a 4K (2160p) UHD Blu-ray presentation in Dolby Vision (HDR10 compatible); restored original lossless mono, restored original Perspecta stereo, and DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio options; optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing; a brand new audio commentary by film historians Kim Newman and Barry Forshaw; a newly filmed appreciation of Bebe & Louis Barron’s pioneering electronic score; archival documentaries Watch the Skies!: Science Fiction, The 1950s and Us and Amazing!: Exploring the Far Reaches of Forbidden Planet; an archival featurette Robby the Robot: Engineering a Sci-Fi Icon; deleted scenes; lost footage; The Invisible Boy, Robby the Robot in his second feature film; “Robot Client,” an episode of The Thin Man TV series featuring Robby the Robot; two excerpts from MGM Parade; the original shooting script; the theatrical trailer; image galleries; a double-sided fold-out poster; and a collectors’ booklet.

Whoa, now that's a collector's package! Especially nice for fans of Robby the Robot. I'm guessing he's the second most recognizable "actor" in this classic movie.

but there is something else

about 10 years ago, an older theater in Jersey City would run old movies on Saturday night and often have some interesting features and people. one of the movies was forbidden planet, and they had the original soundtrack, which was kind of in stereo. to achieve the stereo effect, they had two speakers on stage. One of the speakerswould become louder, when dialogue was given and that gave the impression of stereo.

they also had someone there who knew a lot about this and explained it. it was a great movie, it was wonderful to see it full screen, and to hear the old-fashioned stereo effect.

This should be a great release for you, then. It has the Perspecta stereo mix, which may have been what you heard. It also has a never-released aspect ratio, so you're getting the real deal.
